Jon Meacham: There Is a Hugely Legitimate Reason To Worry About Fascism at Home

MEACHAM Well there s ░░░░░░░░ think one of the ░░░░░░░░ disconnects that you ve ░░░░░░░░ out is between people ░░░░░░░░ talk about these things ░░░░░░░░ people who poll on ░░░░░░░░ and then in a ░░░░░░░░ then talk about the ░░░░░░░░ results And what people ░░░░░░░░ think And my own ░░░░░░░░ is that part of ░░░░░░░░ wages of having such ░░░░░░░░ radically polarized political class ░░░░░░░░ is to say those ░░░░░░░░ have an economic cultural ░░░░░░░░ often ideological stake in ░░░░░░░░ unfolding political drama that ░░░░░░░░ of that polarization you ░░░░░░░░ s not in anyone ░░░░░░░░ interest to say what ░░░░░░░░ just said Because what ░░░░░░░░ interesting about hey everything ░░░░░░░░ good You know yeah ░░░░░░░░ are problems we should ░░░░░░░░ on it you know ░░░░░░░░ that s not going ░░░░░░░░ get people outraged It ░░░░░░░░ not going to guarantee ░░░░░░░░ that people are going ░░░░░░░░ tune in You need ░░░░░░░░ the right you need ░░░░░░░░ think that the world ░░░░░░░░ ending and that President ░░░░░░░░ bizarrely is leading this ░░░░░░░░ end times And on ░░░░░░░░ left you have to ░░░░░░░░ perpetually on edge about ░░░░░░░░ at home And there ░░░░░░░░ a hugely legitimate reason ░░░░░░░░ worry about fascism at ░░░░░░░░ because the only threat ░░░░░░░░ main threat to the ░░░░░░░░ the American state that ░░░░░░░░ just described is internal ░░░░░░░░ It s that we ░░░░░░░░ gnaw on ourselves We ░░░░░░░░ let appetite and ambition ░░░░░░░░ a kind of constitutional ░░░░░░░░ where we re not ░░░░░░░░ but we re trying ░░░░░░░░ get a little more ░░░░░░░░ And where democratic capitalism ░░░░░░░░ in fact create prosperity ░░░░░░░░ possibility for others I ░░░░░░░░ think that part of ░░░░░░░░ I think the the ░░░░░░░░ problem and I think ░░░░░░░░ helps explain the president ░░░░░░░░ polling numbers is that ░░░░░░░░ s little incentive in ░░░░░░░░ polarized political climate to ░░░░░░░░ what you just said ░░░░░░░░ true it is And ░░░░░░░░ think that s what ░░░░░░░░ case that has to ░░░░░░░░ made again and again ░░░░░░░░ it may be that ░░░░░░░░ people who decide the ░░░░░░░░ election are not watching ░░░░░░░░ this morning are not ░░░░░░░░ in to the minute ░░░░░░░░ minute but who are ░░░░░░░░ about five or six ░░░░░░░░ and are going to ░░░░░░░░ the state of the ░░░░░░░░ sometime next year And ░░░░░░░░ think that that s ░░░░░░░░ necessarily a bad thing ░░░░░░░░ it is where it ░░░░░░░░ create a cost though ░░░░░░░░ that what we re ░░░░░░░░ this week with President ░░░░░░░░ going to NATO with ░░░░░░░░ unfolding story is this ░░░░░░░░ why we have presidents ░░░░░░░░ is why we need ░░░░░░░░ people to be president.”
