RUSH TRANSCRIPT There s ░░░░░░░░ fallout tonight for ride ░░░░░░░░ company uber after it ░░░░░░░░ a don t call ░░░░░░░░ Karen panel The event ░░░░░░░░ its employees irate And ░░░░░░░░ the ride share giant ░░░░░░░░ head of diversity equity ░░░░░░░░ inclusion is on leave ░░░░░░░░ and Hispanic employees say ░░░░░░░░ the focus of the ░░░░░░░░ were insensitive to people ░░░░░░░░ color According to The ░░░░░░░░ York Times employees were ░░░░░░░░ the sessions were billed ░░░░░░░░ diving into the spectrum ░░░░░░░░ American white woman s ░░░░░░░░ and hearing from white ░░░░░░░░ who work at uber ░░░░░░░░ a focus on the ░░░░░░░░ persona The invitation said ░░░░░░░░ the conversation was supposed ░░░░░░░░ be open and honest ░░░░░░░░ uber responded in a ░░░░░░░░ writing we have heard ░░░░░░░░ many of you are ░░░░░░░░ pain and upset by ░░░░░░░░ s moving forward session ░░░░░░░░ it was meant to ░░░░░░░░ a dialogue it s ░░░░░░░░ that those who attended ░░░░░░░░ not feel heard Let ░░░░░░░░ bring back our panel ░░░░░░░░ for the uninitiated Karen ░░░░░░░░ a term that s ░░░░░░░░ on the internet basically ░░░░░░░░ white woman calling the ░░░░░░░░ or the manager on ░░░░░░░░ for doing something illegal ░░░░░░░░ do we even start ░░░░░░░░ this What do you ░░░░░░░░ of it Someone finally ░░░░░░░░ up for the plight ░░░░░░░░ the white woman To ░░░░░░░░ fair I shouldn t ░░░░░░░░ gone to you It ░░░░░░░░ totally fine I couldn ░░░░░░░░ have taken it seriously ░░░░░░░░ it It s almost ░░░░░░░░ It s when you ░░░░░░░░ so far in being ░░░░░░░░ that you lose the ░░░░░░░░ behind it Maybe a ░░░░░░░░ too far to put ░░░░░░░░ on leave She is ░░░░░░░░ Asian American woman who ░░░░░░░░ think went overboard trying ░░░░░░░░ be so inclusive It ░░░░░░░░ absurd You re talking ░░░░░░░░ a history of racism ░░░░░░░░ things we re grappling ░░░░░░░░ in terms of social ░░░░░░░░ And to equate that ░░░░░░░░ the struggle of being ░░░░░░░░ white woman is not ░░░░░░░░ Is this backlash to ░░░░░░░░ backlash Companies are worried ░░░░░░░░ being too diverse or ░░░░░░░░ hit for diversity equity ░░░░░░░░ inclusion programs No I ░░░░░░░░ black people were offended ░░░░░░░░ they re offended because ░░░░░░░░ if don t call ░░░░░░░░ Karen is a slur ░░░░░░░░ to the n word ░░░░░░░░ that has this historic ░░░░░░░░ and trauma behind it ░░░░░░░░ Karen is something that ░░░░░░░░ out a couple of ░░░░░░░░ ago and it s ░░░░░░░░ the same thing A ░░░░░░░░ woman stood up in ░░░░░░░░ meeting saying how are ░░░░░░░░ going to stop having ░░░░░░░░ tone deaf conversations And ░░░░░░░░ way that the diversity ░░░░░░░░ responded was demeaning She ░░░░░░░░ you know well you ░░░░░░░░ engaging in strategic ignorance ░░░░░░░░ you had this Asian ░░░░░░░░ telling this black woman ░░░░░░░░ to respond to the ░░░░░░░░ of white women and ░░░░░░░░ becomes comical Strategically ignorant ░░░░░░░░ s a great phrase ░░░░░░░░ sounds like what so ░░░░░░░░ companies try to do ░░░░░░░░ the cheat this is ░░░░░░░░ people to go to ░░░░░░░░ session That s the ░░░░░░░░ problem And then making ░░░░░░░░ sort of go through ░░░░░░░░ process that doesn t ░░░░░░░░ have a lot of ░░░░░░░░ behind it If people ░░░░░░░░ t confident in the ░░░░░░░░ and they feel like ░░░░░░░░ re checking a box ░░░░░░░░ they re there against ░░░░░░░░ will and it s ░░░░░░░░ clear what the outcome ░░░░░░░░ supposed to be you ░░░░░░░░ set yourself up for ░░░░░░░░ which is what they ░░░░░░░░ here and not the ░░░░░░░░ and inclusion they sought ░░░░░░░░ do You can t ░░░░░░░░ it on the cheap ░░░░░░░░ takes years There are ░░░░░░░░ out there that have ░░░░░░░░ long standing mentorship programs ░░░░░░░░ conversations with the leadership ░░░░░░░░ the company which is ░░░░░░░░ where the change has ░░░░░░░░ start And it takes ░░░░░░░░ generation before you xerox ░░░░░░░░ remember writing about stuff ░░░░░░░░ the 80s They had ░░░░░░░░ great diversity program for ░░░░░░░░ level managers Years later ░░░░░░░░ Burns a product of ░░░░░░░░ environment who glue grew ░░░░░░░░ in the housing projects ░░░░░░░░ New York City becomes ░░░░░░░░ CEO of a fortune ░░░░░░░░ company It can be ░░░░░░░░ but it s not ░░░░░░░░ overnight Part of this ░░░░░░░░ that there are so ░░░░░░░░ attacks on what you ░░░░░░░░ talking about Those initiatives ░░░░░░░░ were born out of ░░░░░░░░ of research born out ░░░░░░░░ the fact that racism ░░░░░░░░ real in this country ░░░░░░░░ being devalued as everybody ░░░░░░░░ just being cancelled when ░░░░░░░░ these companies do need ░░░░░░░░ deal with racism I ░░░░░░░░ trying to avoid looking ░░░░░░░░ you because you re ░░░░░░░░ black woman I m ░░░░░░░░ Hispanic woman How we ░░░░░░░░ about this diving into ░░░░░░░░ spectrum of what a ░░░░░░░░ woman s experience in ░░░░░░░░ and you re asking ░░░░░░░░ room of Hispanic and ░░░░░░░░ women And they said ░░░░░░░░ they felt they were ░░░░░░░░ scolded So look if ░░░░░░░░ s what the diversity ░░░░░░░░ is doing she s ░░░░░░░░ got the formula wrong ░░░░░░░░ negative here and the ░░░░░░░░ here is that I ░░░░░░░░ it s really important ░░░░░░░░ we have honest open ░░░░░░░░ about race We are ░░░░░░░░ going to be sensitized ░░░░░░░░ other people s experience ░░░░░░░░ we hear about them ░░░░░░░░ we learn it I ░░░░░░░░ t know what the ░░░░░░░░ experience is unless I ░░░░░░░░ hearing it from my ░░░░░░░░ I m hearing it ░░░░░░░░ people I know So ░░░░░░░░ conversations are absolutely essentially ░░░░░░░░ in places like Florida ░░░░░░░░ you know ground zero ░░░░░░░░ all insanity these days ░░░░░░░░ diversity equity and inclusion ░░░░░░░░ one of the many ░░░░░░░░ Ron DeSantis has seen ░░░░░░░░ to ban in state ░░░░░░░░ and universities And we ░░░░░░░░ ensure diversity equity and ░░░░░░░░ is done ethically seriously ░░░░░░░░ these conversations are being ░░░░░░░░ After you and I ░░░░░░░░ laughing about this which ░░░░░░░░ going to take me ░░░░░░░░ a day or two ░░░░░░░░ think we have to ░░░░░░░░ on how we get ░░░░░░░░ conversations going To play ░░░░░░░░ s advocate here isn ░░░░░░░░ there an argument that ░░░░░░░░ this diversity equity and ░░░░░░░░ officer was trying to ░░░░░░░░ was have a hard ░░░░░░░░ about how a lot ░░░░░░░░ white people do feel ░░░░░░░░ they are unfairly called ░░░░░░░░ that they are at ░░░░░░░░ of being put on ░░░░░░░░ internet and shamed and ░░░░░░░░ Maybe that s what ░░░░░░░░ was trying to do ░░░░░░░░ that s what she ░░░░░░░░ trying to do But ░░░░░░░░ s a way to ░░░░░░░░ it You have to ░░░░░░░░ a foundation of respect ░░░░░░░░ and I think you ░░░░░░░░ to have other people ░░░░░░░░ heard other than you ░░░░░░░░ So you can t ░░░░░░░░ that conversation without first ░░░░░░░░ a real relationship You ░░░░░░░░ t have a real ░░░░░░░░ with people that you ░░░░░░░░ t know about topics ░░░░░░░░ are this hurtful and ░░░░░░░░ serious Maybe she should ░░░░░░░░ asked the black and ░░░░░░░░ and brown women in ░░░░░░░░ room to you know ░░░░░░░░ up with how we ░░░░░░░░ about this Because I ░░░░░░░░ we have to talk ░░░░░░░░ these things and they ░░░░░░░░ important But let s ░░░░░░░░ remember you know the ░░░░░░░░ persona is The Karen ░░░░░░░░ is not about a ░░░░░░░░ woman It s about ░░░░░░░░ privileged racist white woman ░░░░░░░░ is doing things that ░░░░░░░░ against people of color ░░░░░░░░ specifically what we re ░░░░░░░░ about when the cops ░░░░░░░░ called on a black ░░░░░░░░ right in the situation ░░░░░░░░ they re not doing ░░░░░░░░ illegal is that it ░░░░░░░░ puts their life at ░░░░░░░░ I mean we ve ░░░░░░░░ that happen I just ░░░░░░░░ to read real quick ░░░░░░░░ one employee had to ░░░░░░░░ I think when people ░░░░░░░░ called karens it s ░░░░░░░░ it s someone who ░░░░░░░░ little empathy to others ░░░░░░░░ bothered by minorities others ░░░░░░░░ don t look like ░░░░░░░░ Why can t bad ░░░░░░░░ not be called out ░░░░░░░░ was said in a ░░░░░░░░ channel at uber I ░░░░░░░░ that s a fair ░░░░░░░░ Bad behavior is bad ░░░░░░░░ It ought to be ░░░░░░░░ to be called
