Gov. Whitmer on MSU Shooting: ‘We Know that This Is a Uniquely American Problem’

Whitmer Thank you everybody ░░░░░░░░ Spartan community is reeling ░░░░░░░░ I want to start ░░░░░░░░ thanking law enforcement including ░░░░░░░░ Michigan State University police ░░░░░░░░ state police the FBI ░░░░░░░░ of our local agencies ░░░░░░░░ responders local departments and ░░░░░░░░ as far away as ░░░░░░░░ County for their efforts ░░░░░░░░ night I also want ░░░░░░░░ thank the incredible medical ░░░░░░░░ at Sparrow who are ░░░░░░░░ hard to care for ░░░░░░░░ injured as well as ░░░░░░░░ community members that shared ░░░░░░░░ so that our law ░░░░░░░░ could act We mourn ░░░░░░░░ loss of beautiful souls ░░░░░░░░ and pray for those ░░░░░░░░ are continuing to fight ░░░░░░░░ their lives Every Spartan ░░░░░░░░ parent and staff member ░░░░░░░░ know that Michiganders and ░░░░░░░░ everywhere are thinking of ░░░░░░░░ today President Biden and ░░░░░░░░ spoke last night He ░░░░░░░░ his support and the ░░░░░░░░ of an entire nation ░░░░░░░░ we ll work together ░░░░░░░░ do what is necessary ░░░░░░░░ help the MSU community ░░░░░░░░ We are all broken ░░░░░░░░ an all too familiar ░░░░░░░░ Another place that is ░░░░░░░░ to be about community ░░░░░░░░ togetherness shattered by bullets ░░░░░░░░ bloodshed We know that ░░░░░░░░ is a uniquely American ░░░░░░░░ Today is the fifth ░░░░░░░░ of the Parkland shooting ░░░░░░░░ are mere weeks past ░░░░░░░░ Lunar New Year shooting ░░░░░░░░ a dance hall and ░░░░░░░░ few months past a ░░░░░░░░ at an elementary school ░░░░░░░░ Uvalde and looking back ░░░░░░░░ a year marked by ░░░░░░░░ at grocery stores parades ░░░░░░░░ so many other ordinary ░░░░░░░░ situations We cannot keep ░░░░░░░░ like this Our children ░░░░░░░░ scared to go to ░░░░░░░░ People feel unsafe in ░░░░░░░░ houses of worship or ░░░░░░░░ stores Too many of ░░░░░░░░ scan rooms for exits ░░░░░░░░ we enter them and ░░░░░░░░ of us have gone ░░░░░░░░ the grim exercise of ░░░░░░░░ out who our last ░░░░░░░░ would be to Last ░░░░░░░░ a lot of kids ░░░░░░░░ this campus made those ░░░░░░░░ They worried for their ░░░░░░░░ and for their friends ░░░░░░░░ their fellow Spartans Parents ░░░░░░░░ Michigan were on pins ░░░░░░░░ needles calling their kids ░░░░░░░░ tell them that they ░░░░░░░░ them As parents we ░░░░░░░░ our kids it s ░░░░░░░░ to be okay We ░░░░░░░░ that all the time ░░░░░░░░ the truth is words ░░░░░░░░ not good enough We ░░░░░░░░ act and we will ░░░░░░░░ today let s hold ░░░░░░░░ MSU and East Lansing ░░░░░░░░ s close and let ░░░░░░░░ think of the families ░░░░░░░░ friends of those who ░░░░░░░░ lost those fighting for ░░░░░░░░ lives and the countless ░░░░░░░░ whose lives are forever ░░░░░░░░ by yesterday s shooting ░░░░░░░░ will get through this ░░░░░░░░ and we will do ░░░░░░░░ with the full support ░░░░░░░░ the state of Michigan ░░░░░░░░ the U S federal ░░░░░░░░ With that I would ░░░░░░░░ to hand us over ░░░░░░░░ our congresswoman, Elissa Slotkin.”
