Our next guest is ░░░░░░░░ CEO of the most ░░░░░░░░ company in the world ░░░░░░░░ its way to perhaps ░░░░░░░░ the first trillion dollar ░░░░░░░░ company he is Apple ░░░░░░░░ Tim Cook and he ░░░░░░░░ going to be interviewed ░░░░░░░░ fortune executive editor Adam ░░░░░░░░ please welcome them Thank ░░░░░░░░ Allen and welcome Tim ░░░░░░░░ it s great to ░░░░░░░░ here I m so ░░░░░░░░ personally that you re ░░░░░░░░ helping us make history ░░░░░░░░ Guangzhou Allen if we ░░░░░░░░ t mention any company ░░░░░░░░ Apple has a competitive ░░░░░░░░ with we wouldn t ░░░░░░░░ much to talk about ░░░░░░░░ couldn t mention any ░░░░░░░░ during our I know ░░░░░░░░ ve been here all ░░░░░░░░ so we have we ░░░░░░░░ a lot of exciting ░░░░░░░░ to talk about but ░░░░░░░░ wanted to start by ░░░░░░░░ looking back Apple has ░░░░░░░░ rich history with China ░░░░░░░░ you have a rich ░░░░░░░░ with China because you ░░░░░░░░ been traveling here a ░░░░░░░░ time could you share ░░░░░░░░ thought on that and ░░░░░░░░ reflect on what has ░░░░░░░░ yeah I came to ░░░░░░░░ the for the first ░░░░░░░░ in maybe a quarter ░░░░░░░░ ago so that series ░░░░░░░░ hair is gray by ░░░░░░░░ and it s just ░░░░░░░░ a sea change I ░░░░░░░░ you think about it ░░░░░░░░ the some of the ░░░░░░░░ modern cities in the ░░░░░░░░ are in China in ░░░░░░░░ the mid 90s you ░░░░░░░░ t find any modern ░░░░░░░░ of the world here ░░░░░░░░ infrastructure that is going ░░░░░░░░ in China whether you ░░░░░░░░ know it from the ░░░░░░░░ you land in the ░░░░░░░░ to the roads it ░░░░░░░░ just extraordinary the most ░░░░░░░░ in the world arguably ░░░░░░░░ think the other thing ░░░░░░░░ you you feel is ░░░░░░░░ over that period of ░░░░░░░░ there s a lot ░░░░░░░░ openness than there was ░░░░░░░░ in the mid 90s ░░░░░░░░ not where we don ░░░░░░░░ like to be but ░░░░░░░░ come an extraordinary distance ░░░░░░░░ China at that time ░░░░░░░░ at least from from ░░░░░░░░ point of view was ░░░░░░░░ mainly in China now ░░░░░░░░ plays a leadership position ░░░░░░░░ the world in in ░░░░░░░░ different areas and so ░░░░░░░░ s I mean it ░░░░░░░░ like a different country ░░░░░░░░ you were to come ░░░░░░░░ when I did and ░░░░░░░░ went to sleep for ░░░░░░░░ 25 years and you ░░░░░░░░ parachuted back in it ░░░░░░░░ be unrecognizable as if ░░░░░░░░ were a supply chain ░░░░░░░░ Van Winkle that s ░░░░░░░░ that s right well ░░░░░░░░ s plunge into talking ░░░░░░░░ apples apples business in ░░░░░░░░ 10 perhaps give give ░░░░░░░░ a quick overview of ░░░░░░░░ many things that Apple ░░░░░░░░ here you know it ░░░░░░░░ a extraordinarily China has ░░░░░░░░ extraordinary skills and so ░░░░░░░░ probably the part that ░░░░░░░░ the most unknown is ░░░░░░░░ s almost two million ░░░░░░░░ developers in China that ░░░░░░░░ apps for the iOS ░░░░░░░░ Store and these are ░░░░░░░░ of the most innovative ░░░░░░░░ apps in the world ░░░░░░░░ the entrepreneurs that run ░░░░░░░░ are some of the ░░░░░░░░ inspiring and entrepreneurial in ░░░░░░░░ world those are sold ░░░░░░░░ only here but exported ░░░░░░░░ the world also in ░░░░░░░░ manufacturing space China has ░░░░░░░░ into very advanced manufacturing ░░░░░░░░ so you find in ░░░░░░░░ the sort of the ░░░░░░░░ of craftsmen kind of ░░░░░░░░ and sophisticated robotics and ░░░░░░░░ of the computer science ░░░░░░░░ that intersection which is ░░░░░░░░ very rare to find ░░░░░░░░ that that kind of ░░░░░░░░ which is very important ░░░░░░░░ our business because of ░░░░░░░░ percent and quality level ░░░░░░░░ that that we like ░░░░░░░░ then of course the ░░░░░░░░ that most people focus ░░░░░░░░ when they if they ░░░░░░░░ if they re a ░░░░░░░░ coming to China s ░░░░░░░░ focus on the market ░░░░░░░░ in the size market ░░░░░░░░ obviously it s the ░░░░░░░░ market in the world ░░░░░░░░ so many different areas ░░░░░░░░ for us the the ░░░░░░░░ one attraction is the ░░░░░░░░ of people and and ░░░░░░░░ so we ve had ░░░░░░░░ extraordinary relationship over three ░░░░░░░░ really let s come ░░░░░░░░ to the manufacturing and ░░░░░░░░ that s changed I ░░░░░░░░ most people think of ░░░░░░░░ s importance to Apple ░░░░░░░░ Apple has been manufacturing ░░░░░░░░ in California manufacturing in ░░░░░░░░ for many years you ░░░░░░░░ central to this strategy ░░░░░░░░ Apple and your way ░░░░░░░░ before you were CEO ░░░░░░░░ so the notion is ░░░░░░░░ designed these things they ░░░░░░░░ them over China made ░░░░░░░░ it s an antiquated ░░░░░░░░ isn t that right ░░░░░░░░ it s not it ░░░░░░░░ not designed and then ░░░░░░░░ over that sounds like ░░░░░░░░ s not interaction that ░░░░░░░░ truth is the process ░░░░░░░░ and process development associated ░░░░░░░░ our products are require ░░░░░░░░ in and of itself ░░░░░░░░ only the product but ░░░░░░░░ way that it s ░░░░░░░░ because we want to ░░░░░░░░ things in the scale ░░░░░░░░ hundreds of millions and ░░░░░░░░ want the quality level ░░░░░░░░ zero defect right that ░░░░░░░░ always what we thrive ░░░░░░░░ and the way that ░░░░░░░░ get there is particularly ░░░░░░░░ you re pushing the ░░░░░░░░ on the type of ░░░░░░░░ that you have and ░░░░░░░░ precision that your your ░░░░░░░░ precision of the specifications ░░░░░░░░ you re forcing requires ░░░░░░░░ hand and glove kind ░░░░░░░░ partnership you you don ░░░░░░░░ do it by throwing ░░░░░░░░ over the chasm it ░░░░░░░░ never work I can ░░░░░░░░ imagine I can t ░░░░░░░░ how that would be ░░░░░░░░ don t want to ░░░░░░░░ I know you visited ░░░░░░░░ manufacturing partner this week ░░░░░░░░ you tell everybody about ░░░░░░░░ and by the way ░░░░░░░░ in the afternoon I ░░░░░░░░ interviewing Terry Guo of ░░░░░░░░ that s not who ░░░░░░░░ visited this week right ░░░░░░░░ no I visited a ░░░░░░░░ of different partners I ░░░░░░░░ ICT and for those ░░░░░░░░ you that haven t ░░░░░░░░ of ICT they manufacture ░░░░░░░░ other things the air ░░░░░░░░ for us and when ░░░░░░░░ think about air pods ░░░░░░░░ a user you might ░░░░░░░░ oh this couldn t ░░░░░░░░ that hard it s ░░░░░░░░ small the air pods ░░░░░░░░ several hundred components in ░░░░░░░░ and the level of ░░░░░░░░ embedded to get the ░░░░░░░░ quality without getting into ░░░░░░░░ nerdy engineering it s ░░░░░░░░ hard and it requires ░░░░░░░░ level of skill that ░░░░░░░░ you know extremely high ░░░░░░░░ we met a CT ░░░░░░░░ ICT back many years ░░░░░░░░ they started making cables ░░░░░░░░ us grace woohoo is ░░░░░░░░ the company started her ░░░░░░░░ working for Han high ░░░░░░░░ the production line and ░░░░░░░░ this is an innkeeper ░░░░░░░░ a fact he was ░░░░░░░░ factory worker Jordan this ░░░░░░░░ an this is an ░░░░░░░░ example of the Chinese ░░░░░░░░ being realized now she ░░░░░░░░ a multi billion dollar ░░░░░░░░ that does unbelievable quality ░░░░░░░░ and I m not ░░░░░░░░ an advertisement for them ░░░░░░░░ you ve just done ░░░░░░░░ very good way but ░░░░░░░░ yeah she s you ░░░░░░░░ unbelievable really and so ░░░░░░░░ heard that and the ░░░░░░░░ that I I loved ░░░░░░░░ the quality and the ░░░░░░░░ that that they do ░░░░░░░░ the other thing they ░░░░░░░░ is she believes she ░░░░░░░░ she shares our view ░░░░░░░░ how you treat people ░░░░░░░░ so if you were ░░░░░░░░ go there and talk ░░░░░░░░ a lot of the ░░░░░░░░ workers which we do ░░░░░░░░ you would find some ░░░░░░░░ the happiest people in ░░░░░░░░ world there because they ░░░░░░░░ treated so well and ░░░░░░░░ s very important to ░░░░░░░░ in how we present ░░░░░░░░ and and I have ░░░░░░░░ compliment her on on ░░░░░░░░ doing that I also ░░░░░░░░ to a company this ░░░░░░░░ the that works on ░░░░░░░░ front facing camera for ░░░░░░░░ here in going to ░░░░░░░░ in Guangzhou and again ░░░░░░░░ technical highly precise advanced ░░░░░░░░ in and it s ░░░░░░░░ skill here is just ░░░░░░░░ on that point give ░░░░░░░░ an update I think ░░░░░░░░ was about two years ░░░░░░░░ you you said publicly ░░░░░░░░ you were asked why ░░░░░░░░ you do so much ░░░░░░░░ in China yeah you ░░░░░░░░ we d love to ░░░░░░░░ it other places ie ░░░░░░░░ United States but the ░░░░░░░░ sheer volume of engineers ░░░░░░░░ China is greater than ░░░░░░░░ other place we might ░░░░░░░░ is that basically still ░░░░░░░░ case yeah there s ░░░░░░░░ miss there s a ░░░░░░░░ about China that and ░░░░░░░░ me at least give ░░░░░░░░ my opinion the the ░░░░░░░░ conception is that companies ░░░░░░░░ to China because of ░░░░░░░░ labor cost I m ░░░░░░░░ sure what part of ░░░░░░░░ they go to but ░░░░░░░░ truth is China stopped ░░░░░░░░ the low labor costs ░░░░░░░░ many years ago and ░░░░░░░░ is not the reason ░░░░░░░░ come to China from ░░░░░░░░ supply point of view ░░░░░░░░ reason is because of ░░░░░░░░ skill and the the ░░░░░░░░ of skill in one ░░░░░░░░ and the type of ░░░░░░░░ it is like the ░░░░░░░░ we do require really ░░░░░░░░ tooling and the the ░░░░░░░░ that you have to ░░░░░░░░ in tooling and working ░░░░░░░░ the materials that we ░░░░░░░░ are state of the ░░░░░░░░ and the tooling skill ░░░░░░░░ very deep here you ░░░░░░░░ in in the US ░░░░░░░░ could have a meeting ░░░░░░░░ tooling engineers and I ░░░░░░░░ not sure we could ░░░░░░░░ the room in China ░░░░░░░░ could fill multiple football ░░░░░░░░ it s that though ░░░░░░░░ vocational expertise is very ░░░░░░░░ very very deep here ░░░░░░░░ I give the the ░░░░░░░░ system a lot of ░░░░░░░░ for continuing to push ░░░░░░░░ that even when others ░░░░░░░░ de emphasizing vocational now ░░░░░░░░ think many countries in ░░░░░░░░ world have woke up ░░░░░░░░ said you know this ░░░░░░░░ a key thing and ░░░░░░░░ ve got to correct ░░░░░░░░ but China called that ░░░░░░░░ from the beginning let ░░░░░░░░ shift from the supply ░░░░░░░░ to Europe to your ░░░░░░░░ business this is a ░░░░░░░░ competitive market in every ░░░░░░░░ how is the eye ░░░░░░░░ is the iPhone doing ░░░░░░░░ the competition which is ░░░░░░░░ right the competition here ░░░░░░░░ fierce it is we ░░░░░░░░ of course we ve ░░░░░░░░ battling competition for lives ░░░░░░░░ know we competed against ░░░░░░░░ monopolist with Microsoft for ░░░░░░░░ still do and and ░░░░░░░░ competing against strong competitors ░░░░░░░░ not new for Apple ░░░░░░░░ know we focus on ░░░░░░░░ and believe that if ░░░░░░░░ make the best products ░░░░░░░░ we can convince enough ░░░░░░░░ to buy then that ░░░░░░░░ can have an ok ░░░░░░░░ we ve never we ░░░░░░░░ never had an objective ░░░░░░░░ make the most and ░░░░░░░░ in very few times ░░░░░░░░ the history of the ░░░░░░░░ does the best and ░░░░░░░░ most line up sometimes ░░░░░░░░ two things intersect but ░░░░░░░░ is always focused on ░░░░░░░░ and if we happen ░░░░░░░░ make most then that ░░░░░░░░ ok but it s ░░░░░░░░ the it s not ░░░░░░░░ high order bit for ░░░░░░░░ it s not even ░░░░░░░░ the on the list ░░░░░░░░ so if you look ░░░░░░░░ how iPhone 10 is ░░░░░░░░ here I could not ░░░░░░░░ happier we had a ░░░░░░░░ quarters of negative growth ░░░░░░░░ a year over year ░░░░░░░░ we returned to double ░░░░░░░░ growth last quarter even ░░░░░░░░ the iPhone tinge you ░░░░░░░░ talking about greater China ░░░░░░░░ I m talking about ░░░░░░░░ China but but mainland ░░░░░░░░ would look even better ░░░░░░░░ the in Greater China ░░░░░░░░ have Hong Kong at ░░░░░░░░ Kong has been pressured ░░░░░░░░ for some period of ░░░░░░░░ and so it feels ░░░░░░░░ great and and you ░░░░░░░░ we love being here ░░░░░░░░ you know Ponemah the ░░░░░░░░ and co founder of ░░░░░░░░ cent is coming on ░░░░░░░░ you there several people ░░░░░░░░ suggested that we chat ░░░░░░░░ so important for all ░░░░░░░░ in China that it ░░░░░░░░ more important than than ░░░░░░░░ operating system and therefore ░░░░░░░░ presents a long term ░░░░░░░░ reaiiy don t know ░░░░░░░░ term challenge to Apple ░░░░░░░░ see WeChat or 10 ░░░░░░░░ as a great partner ░░░░░░░░ and so I probably ░░░░░░░░ a different view than ░░░░░░░░ popular view and think ░░░░░░░░ highly of Pony in ░░░░░░░░ for us think about ░░░░░░░░ from our point of ░░░░░░░░ is we have give ░░░░░░░░ take 15 percent share ░░░░░░░░ the smartphone market in ░░░░░░░░ so that means there ░░░░░░░░ 85 percent that s ░░░░░░░░ somebody else is selling ░░░░░░░░ truth is if it ░░░░░░░░ easy to switch who ░░░░░░░░ going to benefit from ░░░░░░░░ equation and and guess ░░░░░░░░ if you looked at ░░░░░░░░ from the Android system ░░░░░░░░ iOS in in China ░░░░░░░░ s always a multiple ░░░░░░░░ people doing the other ░░░░░░░░ and and so I ░░░░░░░░ think if anything it ░░░░░░░░ the 0 10 ubiquity ░░░░░░░░ China placed our advantage ░░░░░░░░ because we chat works ░░░░░░░░ the art works just ░░░░░░░░ on the iPhone because ░░░░░░░░ works great on the ░░░░░░░░ and because you can ░░░░░░░░ Android and go to ░░░░░░░░ iOS ecosystem without losing ░░░░░░░░ of the things that ░░░░░░░░ built up in the ░░░░░░░░ Android ecosystem right and ░░░░░░░░ think that if people ░░░░░░░░ I phone and begin ░░░░░░░░ use it the likelihood ░░░░░░░░ people leaving is low ░░░░░░░░ know who would want ░░░░░░░░ have a worse experience ░░░░░░░░ know it s so ░░░░░░░░ re clear your definition ░░░░░░░░ a worse experience is ░░░░░░░░ phone other than an ░░░░░░░░ correct yeah yeah I ░░░░░░░░ say that about Mac ░░░░░░░░ Windows as well just ░░░░░░░░ to be clear Laughter ░░░░░░░░ good you ve had ░░░░░░░░ very busy week you ░░░░░░░░ you started your week ░░░░░░░░ in China at the ░░░░░░░░ the internet conference in ░░░░░░░░ Jiang yeah I want ░░░░░░░░ quickly read a quote ░░░░░░░░ the speech that you ░░░░░░░░ there you said I ░░░░░░░░ in our capacity to ░░░░░░░░ this world work for ░░░░░░░░ not because of Technology ░░░░░░░░ but because of the ░░░░░░░░ we choose to use ░░░░░░░░ we all have to ░░░░░░░░ to infuse technology with ░░░░░░░░ you say what what ░░░░░░░░ you what did you ░░░░░░░░ by that what were ░░░░░░░░ trying to get at ░░░░░░░░ the would the word ░░░░░░░░ well for Apple has ░░░░░░░░ stood at the intersection ░░░░░░░░ Technology and the liberal ░░░░░░░░ and the humanities and ░░░░░░░░ does that mean really ░░░░░░░░ means that we try ░░░░░░░░ put the user the ░░░░░░░░ of everything we do ░░░░░░░░ so we re trying ░░░░░░░░ make the user experience ░░░░░░░░ that s sort of ░░░░░░░░ is our focus and ░░░░░░░░ think a lot about ░░░░░░░░ consequences or what our ░░░░░░░░ can be used for ░░░░░░░░ are not good and ░░░░░░░░ try our best to ░░░░░░░░ up with ways to ░░░░░░░░ the things that aren ░░░░░░░░ good and amplify the ░░░░░░░░ that are with some ░░░░░░░░ of that and take ░░░░░░░░ while driving this is ░░░░░░░░ awful thing you know ░░░░░░░░ should do that so ░░░░░░░░ we did in the ░░░░░░░░ iOS 11 is your ░░░░░░░░ is going to shut ░░░░░░░░ notifications and messages while ░░░░░░░░ re driving and you ░░░░░░░░ going to have to ░░░░░░░░ can override it if ░░░░░░░░ wish but we re ░░░░░░░░ to get people a ░░░░░░░░ to do the right ░░░░░░░░ another example for years ░░░░░░░░ we ve been criticized ░░░░░░░░ this quite a bit ░░░░░░░░ some cases for years ░░░░░░░░ the beginning of the ░░░░░░░░ store we ve always ░░░░░░░░ what was in the ░░░░░░░░ why we ve done ░░░░░░░░ it s because we ░░░░░░░░ as a platform owner ░░░░░░░░ had a responsibility to ░░░░░░░░ sure terrorists kind of ░░░░░░░░ didn t get in ░░░░░░░░ App Store and hate ░░░░░░░░ didn t get there ░░░░░░░░ pornography and all these ░░░░░░░░ that you d never ░░░░░░░░ your kids looking at ░░░░░░░░ so we ve we ░░░░░░░░ had that review from ░░░░░░░░ beginning and and so ░░░░░░░░ really try to think ░░░░░░░░ the consequences of the ░░░░░░░░ we create the downstream ░░░░░░░░ and and and I ░░░░░░░░ that it is increasingly ░░░░░░░░ in a world where ░░░░░░░░ can now do virtually ░░░░░░░░ or is on a ░░░░░░░░ to do anything and ░░░░░░░░ be you that they ░░░░░░░░ negative it can be ░░░░░░░░ for negative purposes and ░░░░░░░░ s important that the ░░░░░░░░ put humanity at the ░░░░░░░░ of their creations and ░░░░░░░░ it s it s ░░░░░░░░ perfect segue to the ░░░░░░░░ apples criticize for everything ░░░░░░░░ the way yeah that ░░░░░░░░ I get criticized for ░░░░░░░░ that one I have ░░░░░░░░ very but the territory ░░░░░░░░ in the West there ░░░░░░░░ criticism of your having ░░░░░░░░ up at wujin at ░░░░░░░░ because some people feel ░░░░░░░░ it was an endorsement ░░░░░░░░ the government s internet ░░░░░░░░ otherwise known as you ░░░░░░░░ the censorship etc your ░░░░░░░░ to that criticism well ░░░░░░░░ never based I don ░░░░░░░░ know how do you ░░░░░░░░ do this but I ░░░░░░░░ base my actions on ░░░░░░░░ poll of how people ░░░░░░░░ going to feel about ░░░░░░░░ and whether I m ░░░░░░░░ take any criticism if ░░░░░░░░ did I d never ░░░░░░░░ anything honestly I also ░░░░░░░░ you were to come ░░░░░░░░ my office in addition ░░░░░░░░ a couple of photos ░░░░░░░░ so of Heroes you ░░░░░░░░ see this huge wooden ░░░░░░░░ with the inscription in ░░░░░░░░ of the in the ░░░░░░░░ quote from President Roosevelt ░░░░░░░░ I have always felt ░░░░░░░░ this you the the ░░░░░░░░ that s missing in ░░░░░░░░ society is there s ░░░░░░░░ enough people that want ░░░░░░░░ listen and understand and ░░░░░░░░ they have a litmus ░░░░░░░░ of do I agree ░░░░░░░░ every single thing that ░░░░░░░░ believes and if not ░░░░░░░░ don t want to ░░░░░░░░ to them and they ░░░░░░░░ a bad person I ░░░░░░░░ never seen the world ░░░░░░░░ way and and and ░░░░░░░░ I know I ll ░░░░░░░░ criticized for going to ░░░░░░░░ meeting I get criticized ░░░░░░░░ going to meetings in ░░░░░░░░ United States yeah and ░░░░░░░░ don t really care ░░░░░░░░ the end of the ░░░░░░░░ because it is the ░░░░░░░░ thing to do to ░░░░░░░░ and to find those ░░░░░░░░ that are common that ░░░░░░░░ can work on together ░░░░░░░░ has done an unbelievable ░░░░░░░░ of lifting people out ░░░░░░░░ poverty they ve done ░░░░░░░░ incredible job I mean ░░░░░░░░ beyond what any country ░░░░░░░░ done we were talking ░░░░░░░░ 19 mid 90s to ░░░░░░░░ the biggest change is ░░░░░░░░ number of people that ░░░░░░░░ been pulled out of ░░░░░░░░ by far and we ░░░░░░░░ all applaud that and ░░░░░░░░ should all feel good ░░░░░░░░ it and so there ░░░░░░░░ in the environmental leadership ░░░░░░░░ is very clear and ░░░░░░░░ aligns completely with apples ░░░░░░░░ the Chinese uh environmental ░░░░░░░░ government I mean they ░░░░░░░░ they re very fixated ░░░░░░░░ on doing the right ░░░░░░░░ to avert climate change ░░░░░░░░ this is something that ░░░░░░░░ a lot to us ░░░░░░░░ well and so what ░░░░░░░░ we always try to ░░░░░░░░ is find the areas ░░░░░░░░ you can work together ░░░░░░░░ the areas of commonality ░░░░░░░░ then the things that ░░░░░░░░ disagree with take time ░░░░░░░░ understand how somebody sees ░░░░░░░░ and if I m ░░░░░░░░ to get criticized for ░░░░░░░░ then so be it ░░░░░░░░ and I think you ░░░░░░░░ I think you have ░░░░░░░░ roomful of people who ░░░░░░░░ agree with the philosophy ░░░░░░░░ listen understand and participate ░░░░░░░░ s why everybody s ░░░░░░░░ today yeah there are ░░░░░░░░ policies that you have ░░░░░░░░ navigate those so for ░░░░░░░░ if something like for ░░░░░░░░ Skype yelled out of ░░░░░░░░ App Store yeah or ░░░░░░░░ software how do you ░░░░░░░░ that as CEO well ░░░░░░░░ you when you go ░░░░░░░░ a country and participate ░░░░░░░░ the market you are ░░░░░░░░ to the laws and ░░░░░░░░ of that country you ░░░░░░░░ don t bring the ░░░░░░░░ and regulations that you ░░░░░░░░ were there that you ░░░░░░░░ to be there you ░░░░░░░░ have the laws and ░░░░░░░░ of that
