TELTER Hey welcome back ░░░░░░░░ RELIABLE SOURCES Our panel ░░░░░░░░ standing by to react ░░░░░░░░ Dean Baquet s comments ░░░░░░░░ first redefining fake news ░░░░░░░░ s the subject of ░░░░░░░░ essay today President Trump ░░░░░░░░ CPAC speech on Friday ░░░░░░░░ all about us versus ░░░░░░░░ including when it came ░░░░░░░░ the media I heard ░░░░░░░░ trying to delineate between ░░░░░░░░ outlets and bad news ░░░░░░░░ BEGIN VIDEO CLIP Trump ░░░░░░░░ I m not against ░░░░░░░░ media I m not ░░░░░░░░ the press But I ░░░░░░░░ only against the fake ░░░░░░░░ media or press Fake ░░░░░░░░ END VIDEO CLIP STELTER ░░░░░░░░ That word has gotten ░░░░░░░░ lot of use in ░░░░░░░░ past few months Back ░░░░░░░░ the election you might ░░░░░░░░ the media reporters like ░░░░░░░░ truly warned about the ░░░░░░░░ of fake news polluting ░░░░░░░░ and Google and Twitter ░░░░░░░░ what we meant by ░░░░░░░░ news was this This ░░░░░░░░ classic example Stories on ░░░░░░░░ up websites claiming that ░░░░░░░░ pope had endorsed Donald ░░░░░░░░ during the campaign Many ░░░░░░░░ were fooled by these ░░░░░░░░ stories I ve been ░░░░░░░░ a time or two ░░░░░░░░ Anonymous writers invent these ░░░░░░░░ either to profit from ░░░░░░░░ clicks or to spread ░░░░░░░░ for a government That ░░░░░░░░ the media industry definition ░░░░░░░░ fake news But after ░░░░░░░░ Day Trump and some ░░░░░░░░ his conservative media allies ░░░░░░░░ to redefine the term ░░░░░░░░ they ve largely succeeded ░░░░░░░░ Trump fake news is ░░░░░░░░ story any network that ░░░░░░░░ doesn t seem to ░░░░░░░░ So let me take ░░░░░░░░ minute and translate Trump ░░░░░░░░ you Here is more ░░░░░░░░ what he said at ░░░░░░░░ BEGIN VIDEO CLIP Trump ░░░░░░░░ m against the people ░░░░░░░░ make up stories and ░░░░░░░░ up sources They shouldn ░░░░░░░░ be allowed to use ░░░░░░░░ unless they use somebody ░░░░░░░░ name Let their name ░░░░░░░░ put out there Let ░░░░░░░░ name be put out ░░░░░░░░ AND APPLAUSE END VIDEO ░░░░░░░░ STELTER Translation Trump is ░░░░░░░░ by reporting from The ░░░░░░░░ CNN The Washington Post ░░░░░░░░ other newsrooms reporting using ░░░░░░░░ sources But faking a ░░░░░░░░ is a fireable offense ░░░░░░░░ anyone at these places ░░░░░░░░ to use an anonymous ░░░░░░░░ they vet the source ░░░░░░░░ and get approval from ░░░░░░░░ bosses But I think ░░░░░░░░ Trump says these things ░░░░░░░░ need to explain that ░░░░░░░░ our viewers watching Now ░░░░░░░░ to Trump BEGIN VIDEO ░░░░░░░░ Trump And they make ░░░░░░░░ something else and you ░░░░░░░░ that before the election ░░░░░░░░ polls the polls Take ░░░░░░░░ look at their polls ░░░░░░░░ the last two years ░░░░░░░░ you d think they ░░░░░░░░ fire the pollster right ░░░░░░░░ Trump After years and ░░░░░░░░ of getting battered But ░░░░░░░░ I don t know ░░░░░░░░ mean who knows Maybe ░░░░░░░░ re just bad at ░░░░░░░░ Or maybe they re ░░░░░░░░ legit END VIDEO CLIP ░░░░░░░░ Translation Maybe Trump wants ░░░░░░░░ approval ratings to rise ░░░░░░░░ polls are not fake ░░░░░░░░ are scientifically based Now ░░░░░░░░ polls are better than ░░░░░░░░ And that s why ░░░░░░░░ and other outlets have ░░░░░░░░ standards But polls are ░░░░░░░░ fake news So on ░░░░░░░░ when Trump ripped into ░░░░░░░░ and other news outlets ░░░░░░░░ s Shepard Smith tried ░░░░░░░░ correct him Watch BEGIN ░░░░░░░░ CLIP SHEPARD Smith Fox ░░░░░░░░ In short fake news ░░░░░░░░ made up nonsense delivered ░░░░░░░░ financial gain CNN s ░░░░░░░░ was not fake news ░░░░░░░░ journalists follow the same ░░░░░░░░ to which other news ░░░░░░░░ including Fox News adhere ░░░░░░░░ VIDEO CLIP STELTER Thanks ░░░░░░░░ So I think you ░░░░░░░░ what s happening here ░░░░░░░░ are trying to redefine ░░░░░░░░ news as an insult ░░░░░░░░ a slur Rather than ░░░░░░░░ to reclaim the term ░░░░░░░░ are suggesting we all ░░░░░░░░ our words more carefully ░░░░░░░░ our terms more carefully ░░░░░░░░ weekend at a conference ░░░░░░░░ about misinformation Claire Wardle ░░░░░░░░ there s a spectrum ░░░░░░░░ fake stuff out there ░░░░░░░░ this out Over on ░░░░░░░░ left you see satire ░░░░░░░░ The Daily Show and ░░░░░░░░ Onion not intending to ░░░░░░░░ anybody And then on ░░░░░░░░ right side these are ░░░░░░░░ worst of all fabricated ░░░░░░░░ 100 percent false stories ░░░░░░░░ to deceive and do ░░░░░░░░ Now she defines fabricated ░░░░░░░░ and that kind of ░░░░░░░░ that s what we ░░░░░░░░ talked about when we ░░░░░░░░ fake news months ago ░░░░░░░░ as these terms are ░░░░░░░░ and exploited for partisan ░░░░░░░░ it is complicated out ░░░░░░░░ And as Tara Palmeri ░░░░░░░░ saying earlier people don ░░░░░░░░ know what to believe.
