RUSH TRANSCRIPT Woke hogwash ░░░░░░░░ unwoke Woke nonsense Stupid ░░░░░░░░ If I never hear ░░░░░░░░ word again it will ░░░░░░░░ too soon But there ░░░░░░░░ actually a interesting new ░░░░░░░░ about this subject that ░░░░░░░░ just come out the ░░░░░░░░ couple of weeks called ░░░░░░░░ news how woke media ░░░░░░░░ undermining democracy Bhatia ungar ░░░░░░░░ is the author of ░░░░░░░░ book deputy opinion editor ░░░░░░░░ newsweek and she s ░░░░░░░░ with me now to ░░░░░░░░ through it Thank you ░░░░░░░░ coming in Thank you ░░░░░░░░ much for having me ░░░░░░░░ very brave to have ░░░░░░░░ on Thank you for ░░░░░░░░ me It is why ░░░░░░░░ you said the word ░░░░░░░░ people are really allergic ░░░░░░░░ it now in the ░░░░░░░░ circles and left wing ░░░░░░░░ That s why I ░░░░░░░░ to define it Yes ░░░░░░░░ should define it What ░░░░░░░░ woke first of all ░░░░░░░░ is not woke to ░░░░░░░░ fiercely for police reform ░░░░░░░░ s a global emergency ░░░░░░░░ there was a bill ░░░░░░░░ about police form that ░░░░░░░░ not woke It is ░░░░░░░░ we really need police ░░░░░░░░ It is not woke ░░░░░░░░ advocate for an equitable ░░░░░░░░ decision It is woke ░░░░░░░░ be calling for defunding ░░░░░░░░ It is woke to ░░░░░░░░ saying that merit based ░░░░░░░░ is somehow white supremacy ░░░░░░░░ word woke actually comes ░░░░░░░░ sociologists Brian It was ░░░░░░░░ after originally it was ░░░░░░░░ as black slang in ░░░░░░░░ to refer to things ░░░░░░░░ systemic racism at the ░░░░░░░░ level again something that ░░░░░░░░ very important we talk ░░░░░░░░ But socialists noted something ░░░░░░░░ called the great awokening ░░░░░░░░ they re talking about ░░░░░░░░ starting around 2015 and ░░░░░░░░ is something I m ░░░░░░░░ you and your viewers ░░░░░░░░ what we saw is ░░░░░░░░ liberals starting to have ░░░░░░░░ extreme views on race ░░░░░░░░ even people of color ░░░░░░░░ people of color that ░░░░░░░░ re advocating on behalf ░░░░░░░░ They started to advocate ░░░░░░░░ things like defund the ░░░░░░░░ we saw recently and ░░░░░░░░ is a view most ░░░░░░░░ held by highly affluent ░░░░░░░░ ed caded liberal elites ░░░░░░░░ 81 of African Americans ░░░░░░░░ the defunding of police ░░░░░░░░ my book I m ░░░░░░░░ to explore where did ░░░░░░░░ come from where which ░░░░░░░░ woke come from and ░░░░░░░░ did it happen What ░░░░░░░░ m finding is white ░░░░░░░░ American liberals using the ░░░░░░░░ pain of black Americans ░░░░░░░░ draw from the human ░░░░░░░░ and ban of all ░░░░░░░░ That s the argument ░░░░░░░░ wa you spoke to ░░░░░░░░ media right out in ░░░░░░░░ What is the who ░░░░░░░░ what is the woke ░░░░░░░░ You tell me Brian ░░░░░░░░ we on woke media ░░░░░░░░ No let s talk ░░░░░░░░ people like The New ░░░░░░░░ Times the Washington Post ░░░░░░░░ CNN What they found ░░░░░░░░ starting around 2011 2012 ░░░░░░░░ absolute skyrocketing of the ░░░░░░░░ of woke words like ░░░░░░░░ privilege or marginalization or ░░░░░░░░ These companies started using ░░░░░░░░ words when they went ░░░░░░░░ as a way of ░░░░░░░░ their traffic and it ░░░░░░░░ this feedback loop with ░░░░░░░░ affluent white readership they ░░░░░░░░ courting to where it ░░░░░░░░ public opinion You say ░░░░░░░░ was trying to gain ░░░░░░░░ Maybe it was just ░░░░░░░░ to cover America more ░░░░░░░░ That s a really ░░░░░░░░ question Are they just ░░░░░░░░ a rise in racism ░░░░░░░░ just rise in racism ░░░░░░░░ recognizing marginalized communities take ░░░░░░░░ the lives of all ░░░░░░░░ lives seriously and not ░░░░░░░░ covering one subset that ░░░░░░░░ glitz all of thely ░░░░░░░░ media attention It is ░░░░░░░░ important we cover state ░░░░░░░░ where it exists That ░░░░░░░░ not what s happening ░░░░░░░░ we are seeing is ░░░░░░░░ moral panic around race ░░░░░░░░ is creating the very ░░░░░░░░ that we re supposedly ░░░░░░░░ on behalf of Think ░░░░░░░░ the difference between advocating ░░░░░░░░ police reform coverings issues ░░░░░░░░ police reform and advocating ░░░░░░░░ defunding the police which ░░░░░░░░ a view that is ░░░░░░░░ to harm poor black ░░░░░░░░ more than anybody else ░░░░░░░░ is precisely why it ░░░░░░░░ the one that is ░░░░░░░░ popular It went down ░░░░░░░░ Minneapolis We re not ░░░░░░░░ actual public for defund ░░░░░░░░ police is a terrible ░░░░░░░░ but for the proposals ░░░░░░░░ that slogan We re ░░░░░░░░ seeing public support for ░░░░░░░░ That s exactly right ░░░░░░░░ about the woke stranglehold ░░░░░░░░ describe in the book ░░░░░░░░ say the media is ░░░░░░░░ this woke stranglehold Again ░░░░░░░░ corners of the media ░░░░░░░░ how do you get ░░░░░░░░ of that stranglehold That ░░░░░░░░ a great question I ░░░░░░░░ a lot of time ░░░░░░░░ The New York Times ░░░░░░░░ in my book as ░░░░░░░░ former paper of record ░░░░░░░░ I like to say ░░░░░░░░ get outside attention because ░░░░░░░░ have an outside responsibility ░░░░░░░░ a leader in the ░░░░░░░░ What we really saw ░░░░░░░░ The New York Times ░░░░░░░░ and again is personnel ░░░░░░░░ being made to suit ░░░░░░░░ very very woke pressures ░░░░░░░░ online mobs that were ░░░░░░░░ created by their own ░░░░░░░░ So liberal younger liberal ░░░░░░░░ pressuring management to take ░░░░░░░░ actions right is that ░░░░░░░░ that means Exactly right ░░░░░░░░ t we also see ░░░░░░░░ staffers are just trying ░░░░░░░░ push for a place ░░░░░░░░ will be a more ░░░░░░░░ newsroom more perfect newsroom ░░░░░░░░ perfect opinion page Isn ░░░░░░░░ that just the common ░░░░░░░░ of war that s ░░░░░░░░ for decades What we ░░░░░░░░ really seeing is that ░░░░░░░░ influenced the coverage It ░░░░░░░░ not that some people ░░░░░░░░ to have their say ░░░░░░░░ s literally they have ░░░░░░░░ these highly highly specialized ░░░░░░░░ academic ideas and if ░░░░░░░░ don t cue to ░░░░░░░░ very radical specialized ideas ░░░░░░░░ get thrown out essentially ░░░░░░░░ re not talking about ░░░░░░░░ here but the ral ░░░░░░░░ of debates How do ░░░░░░░░ apply these to election ░░░░░░░░ We saw in Virginia ░░░░░░░░ Republican prevailing over the ░░░░░░░░ In New Jersey Democrat ░░░░░░░░ prevailing over the Republican ░░░░░░░░ does this shape elections ░░░░░░░░ thought my book was ░░░░░░░░ good advertising for this ░░░░░░░░ my book for the ░░░░░░░░ around wokeness is we ░░░░░░░░ hiding a class We ░░░░░░░░ hiding the class of ░░░░░░░░ that discuss incoming inequality ░░░░░░░░ America by focusing on ░░░░░░░░ very specialized academic language ░░░░░░░░ race I believe what ░░░░░░░░ Glenn Youngkin s victory ░░░░░░░░ a perfect example of ░░░░░░░░ The media s response ░░░░░░░░ Youngkin s victory is ░░░░░░░░ the reason they won ░░░░░░░░ There s 100 medias ░░░░░░░░ reactions You re being ░░░░░░░░ generalized I think Let ░░░░░░░░ get more specific for ░░░░░░░░ I have to admit ░░░░░░░░ watched CNN all week ░░░░░░░░ s been a lot ░░░░░░░░ very very good again ░░░░░░░░ flexion on this front ░░░░░░░░ what happened right after ░░░░░░░░ election you saw host ░░░░░░░░ host after host on ░░░░░░░░ say this is a ░░░░░░░░ for white supremacy White ░░░░░░░░ wins ago Racism wins ░░░░░░░░ When the lieutenant governor ░░░░░░░░ won with will be ░░░░░░░░ first black woman to ░░░░░░░░ that job when Glenn ░░░░░░░░ managed to flip majority ░░░░░░░░ districts when he managed ░░░░░░░░ get between 40 and ░░░░░░░░ of Latino voters ever ░░░░░░░░ of those people white ░░░░░░░░ Of course they re ░░░░░░░░ People who are worried ░░░░░░░░ number one the economy ░░░░░░░░ two schooling It seems ░░░░░░░░ me such a self ░░░░░░░░ to tell people who ░░░░░░░░ worried about the economy ░░░░░░░░ is white supremacy right ░░░░░░░░ re essentially criminalizing the ░░░░░░░░ of working class Americans ░░░░░░░░ saw the same thing ░░░░░░░░ the conversation around Critical ░░░░░░░░ Theory right You saw ░░░░░░░░ of these pundits being ░░░░░░░░ these people don t ░░░░░░░░ what Critical Race Theory ░░░░░░░░ That is not a ░░░░░░░░ statement That is a ░░░░░░░░ statement They re not ░░░░░░░░ enough to be opposed ░░░░░░░░ Critical Race Theory how ░░░░░░░░ they oppose it This ░░░░░░░░ to your point in ░░░░░░░░ book about journalists certainly ░░░░░░░░ average columnists agree having ░░░░░░░░ average elements of education ░░░░░░░░ order to send in ░░░░░░░░ resume to a lot ░░░░░░░░ newsrooms you have to ░░░░░░░░ a college degree But ░░░░░░░░ suggest in your book ░░░░░░░░ affects the news coverage ░░░░░░░░ the news coverage Oh ░░░░░░░░ we ve seen this ░░░░░░░░ can trace the abandonment ░░░░░░░░ the working class in ░░░░░░░░ proportion to the number ░░░░░░░░ journalists who are no ░░░░░░░░ working class who are ░░░░░░░░ of the educated elite ░░░░░░░░ do you know how ░░░░░░░░ journalists today what percentage ░░░░░░░░ American journalists have a ░░░░░░░░ degree today 90 92 ░░░░░░░░ read your book I ░░░░░░░░ very shocked and pleased ░░░░░░░░ shouldn t be so ░░░░░░░░ You shouldn t be ░░░░░░░░ shocked What I hope ░░░░░░░░ take away is inequality ░░░░░░░░ class divide
