RUSH TRANSCRIPT We ll ░░░░░░░░ where these investigations lead ░░░░░░░░ Keeping it in New ░░░░░░░░ we are just weeks ░░░░░░░░ now from the primary ░░░░░░░░ that likely will determine ░░░░░░░░ leads America s largest ░░░░░░░░ On June 22nd for ░░░░░░░░ first time ever New ░░░░░░░░ City s crowded mayoral ░░░░░░░░ will be determined by ░░░░░░░░ ranked choice voting system ░░░░░░░░ it stands now the ░░░░░░░░ up for grabs former ░░░░░░░░ candidate Andrew Yang barely ░░░░░░░░ out the competition in ░░░░░░░░ recent poll more than ░░░░░░░░ New Yorkers initially filed ░░░░░░░░ paperwork to run That ░░░░░░░░ now down to eight ░░░░░░░░ Former New York City ░░░░░░░░ commissioner Katherine Garcia recently ░░░░░░░░ the endorsement of the ░░░░░░░░ York Times editorial board ░░░░░░░░ wrote about the importance ░░░░░░░░ the race Writing quote ░░░░░░░░ mix of optimism and ░░░░░░░░ New Yorkers feel highlight ░░░░░░░░ extraordinary challenges facing the ░░░░░░░░ and its next mayor ░░░░░░░░ the coming months and ░░░░░░░░ And perhaps the most ░░░░░░░░ mayoral contest in a ░░░░░░░░ Joining us now the ░░░░░░░░ founders and CEOs of ░░░░░░░░ data analytics company apple ░░░░░░░░ Sasha and Matt Sasha ░░░░░░░░ of all let s ░░░░░░░░ explain to our viewers ░░░░░░░░ these elections are run ░░░░░░░░ for instance what happens ░░░░░░░░ emerges in New York ░░░░░░░░ Like Bill De Blasio ░░░░░░░░ expected him to win ░░░░░░░░ yet he pulled off ░░░░░░░░ shocking win What can ░░░░░░░░ learn from 2013 Well ░░░░░░░░ think one of the ░░░░░░░░ we can learn from ░░░░░░░░ is that this race ░░░░░░░░ won t be decided ░░░░░░░░ the very last couple ░░░░░░░░ days when people tune ░░░░░░░░ just because it s ░░░░░░░░ off year election It ░░░░░░░░ going to be very ░░░░░░░░ low turnout And you ░░░░░░░░ there s a big ░░░░░░░░ question Who actually shows ░░░░░░░░ How do they feel ░░░░░░░░ the issues and the ░░░░░░░░ Do they even know ░░░░░░░░ the candidates are And ░░░░░░░░ lot of people are ░░░░░░░░ starting to tune in ░░░░░░░░ now I want to ░░░░░░░░ that chart back up ░░░░░░░░ and Sasha as you ░░░░░░░░ at it it shows ░░░░░░░░ 2 million registered Democrats ░░░░░░░░ 8 8 of Democrats ░░░░░░░░ up you know voting ░░░░░░░░ the eventual mayor of ░░░░░░░░ York City This is ░░░░░░░░ the way it works ░░░░░░░░ And it is always ░░░░░░░░ if you look look ░░░░░░░░ it that one of ░░░░░░░░ most important political jobs ░░░░░░░░ America one of the ░░░░░░░░ political jobs in America ░░░░░░░░ determined by such a ░░░░░░░░ sliver of voters It ░░░░░░░░ is It s been ░░░░░░░░ standard in the city ░░░░░░░░ the mayor of New ░░░░░░░░ is as you said ░░░░░░░░ of the most recognizable ░░░░░░░░ figures of the country ░░░░░░░░ it s about 8 ░░░░░░░░ Democrats who usually chooses ░░░░░░░░ person that makes up ░░░░░░░░ to 5 of overall ░░░░░░░░ city of New York ░░░░░░░░ it will be interesting ░░░░░░░░ see sort of who ░░░░░░░░ the 4 to 5 ░░░░░░░░ year and who do ░░░░░░░░ vote for And Matt ░░░░░░░░ people think of New ░░░░░░░░ City they think of ░░░░░░░░ as a very liberal ░░░░░░░░ Skpuld think that the ░░░░░░░░ would think that the ░░░░░░░░ primary voters would be ░░░░░░░░ liberal That s just ░░░░░░░░ the case A strong ░░░░░░░░ don t identify themselves ░░░░░░░░ such Tell us about ░░░░░░░░ New York City primary ░░░░░░░░ that s going to ░░░░░░░░ voting in this race ░░░░░░░░ that s absolutely right ░░░░░░░░ I think a lot ░░░░░░░░ people think about New ░░░░░░░░ City elections and they ░░░░░░░░ about Ocasio Cortez They ░░░░░░░░ about Jamal Bowman and ░░░░░░░░ De Blasio What s ░░░░░░░░ interesting is that our ░░░░░░░░ has conducted over 7 ░░░░░░░░ interview of New York ░░░░░░░░ voters over the last ░░░░░░░░ months And that we ░░░░░░░░ seen is that a ░░░░░░░░ of voters who are ░░░░░░░░ Democrats this is Democrats ░░░░░░░░ self identify something other ░░░░░░░░ liberal And perhaps more ░░░░░░░░ as you look at ░░░░░░░░ National dialogue about defunding ░░░░░░░░ police about crime we ░░░░░░░░ an open ended question ░░░░░░░░ New York City voters ░░░░░░░░ them whether they thought ░░░░░░░░ city was on the ░░░░░░░░ track the wrong track ░░░░░░░░ just to Democrats who ░░░░░░░░ eligible to vote in ░░░░░░░░ primary election And when ░░░░░░░░ ask them that those ░░░░░░░░ said the city was ░░░░░░░░ the wrong track when ░░░░░░░░ asked them to volunteer ░░░░░░░░ they thought the city ░░░░░░░░ on the wrong track ░░░░░░░░ one answer volunteered by ░░░░░░░░ by a double digit ░░░░░░░░ was public safety and ░░░░░░░░ So when you actually ░░░░░░░░ to an election where ░░░░░░░░ are choosing who s ░░░░░░░░ to run their city ░░░░░░░░ municipal government that s ░░░░░░░░ s top of mind ░░░░░░░░ Democrats And Willie if ░░░░░░░░ look at the issues ░░░░░░░░ and I know Jonathan ░░░░░░░░ has a question But ░░░░░░░░ he talked about I ░░░░░░░░ this fascinating Number one ░░░░░░░░ and public safety 30 ░░░░░░░░ issues cited here And ░░░░░░░░ you ve got some ░░░░░░░░ incumbent feelings there And ░░░░░░░░ look right below that ░░░░░░░░ and the economy Now ░░░░░░░░ are those three issues ░░░░░░░░ and public policy homelessness ░░░░░░░░ the economy those are ░░░░░░░░ three things that my ░░░░░░░░ friends grouse about when ░░░░░░░░ complain about New York ░░░░░░░░ is not the same ░░░░░░░░ it was in the ░░░░░░░░ before the pandemic before ░░░░░░░░ know when Bloomberg was ░░░░░░░░ or Giuliani was in ░░░░░░░░ It is again when ░░░░░░░░ comes to crime and ░░░░░░░░ always have the media ░░░░░░░░ the mistake of thinking ░░░░░░░░ these Democrats in New ░░░░░░░░ City want to defund ░░░░░░░░ police No actually if ░░░░░░░░ follow it closely there ░░░░░░░░ a lot of neighborhoods ░░░░░░░░ are saying we need ░░░░░░░░ police we need more ░░░░░░░░ on the street We ░░░░░░░░ more police in the ░░░░░░░░ our children are not ░░░░░░░░ And neighborhoods of color ░░░░░░░░ that are impacted by ░░░░░░░░ lack of policing If ░░░░░░░░ put that chart up ░░░░░░░░ can see that NYPD ░░░░░░░░ is way down on ░░░░░░░░ two of that list ░░░░░░░░ can t count that ░░░░░░░░ I think it s ░░░░░░░░ or 11 Interesting Jonathan ░░░░░░░░ and I were sort ░░░░░░░░ smiling that anti De ░░░░░░░░ is a policy issue ░░░░░░░░ it comes in at ░░░░░░░░ two in New York ░░░░░░░░ that s not just ░░░░░░░░ of Andrew Cuomo It ░░░░░░░░ interesting though to the ░░░░░░░░ of New York City ░░░░░░░░ we re talking about ░░░░░░░░ liberal voter but it ░░░░░░░░ not just the upper ░░░░░░░░ side who votes for ░░░░░░░░ things It s not ░░░░░░░░ upper west side Manhattan ░░░░░░░░ central Brooklyn other working ░░░░░░░░ communities of color who ░░░░░░░░ at least in this ░░░░░░░░ seem to prioritize public ░░░░░░░░ issues Thaing issue in ░░░░░░░░ campaign Matt let me ░░░░░░░░ you this is rank ░░░░░░░░ voting for the first ░░░░░░░░ being done here in ░░░░░░░░ nation s largest city ░░░░░░░░ was hoping you could ░░░░░░░░ to us a little ░░░░░░░░ about how this works ░░░░░░░░ provide also a snapshot ░░░░░░░░ where the race stands ░░░░░░░░ now Andrew Yang he ░░░░░░░░ sort of been atop ░░░░░░░░ polls barely Eric Adams ░░░░░░░░ s the Brooklyn bureau ░░░░░░░░ officer he seems to ░░░░░░░░ in second place in ░░░░░░░░ places and Katherine Garcia ░░░░░░░░ is a longtime worked ░░░░░░░░ the city basically ran ░░░░░░░░ department of sanitation there ░░░░░░░░ to be a little ░░░░░░░░ around here right now ░░░░░░░░ picked up the endorsements ░░░░░░░░ the New York Times ░░░░░░░░ also the New York ░░░░░░░░ news which plays well ░░░░░░░░ those working class communities ░░░░░░░░ were just talking about ░░░░░░░░ s exactly right Jonathan ░░░░░░░░ rank choice voting initiative ░░░░░░░░ passed in New York ░░░░░░░░ over the last couple ░░░░░░░░ years is really going ░░░░░░░░ scramble the race in ░░░░░░░░ major way What rank ░░░░░░░░ voting does is rather ░░░░░░░░ a voter voting for ░░░░░░░░ single candidate what they ░░░░░░░░ able to do is ░░░░░░░░ their top five candidates ░░░░░░░░ order of preference And ░░░░░░░░ happens is that candidates ░░░░░░░░ eliminated who you know ░░░░░░░░ you look at the ░░░░░░░░ round look at people ░░░░░░░░ first choice votes If ░░░░░░░░ don t get a ░░░░░░░░ of voters that support ░░░░░░░░ candidate you eliminate the ░░░░░░░░ vote getting candidate And ░░░░░░░░ you eliminate their voters ░░░░░░░░ voter s preferences get ░░░░░░░░ to their second choice ░░░░░░░░ what that means is ░░░░░░░░ in an election like ░░░░░░░░ one it s a ░░░░░░░░ crowded race A lot ░░░░░░░░ candidates don t have ░░░░░░░░ name identification aren t ░░░░░░░░ known What that means ░░░░░░░░ that it s really ░░░░░░░░ to favor candidates who ░░░░░░░░ well known by a ░░░░░░░░ number of voters And ░░░░░░░░ s also interestingly goinit ░░░░░░░░ also going to favor ░░░░░░░░ who have voters who ░░░░░░░░ how to use rank ░░░░░░░░ voting Who understand what ░░░░░░░░ just talked about there ░░░░░░░░ they will preference voters ░░░░░░░░ a way that preference ░░░░░░░░ rather in way that ░░░░░░░░ benefit you know the ░░░░░░░░ that they prefer So ░░░░░░░░ you look at this ░░░░░░░░ as you mentioned Andrew ░░░░░░░░ has done very well ░░░░░░░░ polling in the early ░░░░░░░░ of this race predominantly ░░░░░░░░ he ran for president ░░░░░░░░ was very well known ░░░░░░░░ had sky high name ░░░░░░░░ D about 80 of ░░░░░░░░ registered Democrats in New ░░░░░░░░ knew who he was ░░░░░░░░ lot of these candidates ░░░░░░░░ lesser known But I ░░░░░░░░ as the race is ░░░░░░░░ in these last couple ░░░░░░░░ weeks Eric Adams has ░░░░░░░░ up in the polls ░░░░░░░░ there s a major ░░░░░░░░ for that which is ░░░░░░░░ he s the brookorough ░░░░░░░░ and beyond that he ░░░░░░░░ a candidate of color ░░░░░░░░ in ank choice voting ░░░░░░░░ that can be a ░░░░░░░░ advantage There will be ░░░░░░░░ sizable proportion of the ░░░░░░░░ electorate about a third ░░░░░░░░ will be black voters ░░░░░░░░ those voters heavily advantage ░░░░░░░░ Adams So gentlemen this ░░░░░░░░ Michael Steele here A ░░░░░░░░ of talk about Democrats ░░░░░░░░ York is a democratic ░░░░░░░░ we understand that Are ░░░░░░░░ Republicans in the race ░░░░░░░░ do they stand What ░░░░░░░░ their chances here particularly ░░░░░░░░ rank choice voting It ░░░░░░░░ an opportunity for it ░░░░░░░░ be a great level ░░░░░░░░ the partisan sort of ░░░░░░░░ that tends come in ░░░░░░░░ races and cities like ░░░░░░░░ York and Baltimore and ░░░░░░░░ you re outnumbered as ░░░░░░░░ Republican I grew up ░░░░░░░░ Washington D C you ░░░░░░░░ 10 to one yeah ░░░░░░░░ whatever Just pass me ░░░░░░░░ election So how do ░░░░░░░░ assess the Republican field ░░░░░░░░ such that it exists ░░░░░░░░ their possibility of being ░░░░░░░░ in this system if ░░░░░░░░ in this race but ░░░░░░░░ future races with rank ░░░░░░░░ voting That s a ░░░░░░░░ interesting question Michael Because ░░░░░░░░ or fortunately what you ░░░░░░░░ is that in this ░░░░░░░░ the Republicans really don ░░░░░░░░ have a voice unless ░░░░░░░░ re registered as Democrats ░░░░░░░░ York City is a ░░░░░░░░ primary system which means ░░░░░░░░ if you re not ░░░░░░░░ as a Democrat you ░░░░░░░░ t participate in this ░░░░░░░░ that s going to ░░░░░░░░ the next mayor of ░░░░░░░░ York in the defining ░░░░░░░░ that June primary The ░░░░░░░░ for changing your party ░░░░░░░░ if you wanted to ░░░░░░░░ in the Democratic primary ░░░░░░░░ February 14th It was ░░░░░░░░ long time ago New ░░░░░░░░ City there s seven ░░░░░░░░ more Democrats than there ░░░░░░░░ Republicans these days And ░░░░░░░░ that means is that ░░░░░░░░ out of this June ░░░░░░░░ election you re really ░░░░░░░░ to know who the ░░░░░░░░ is just based on ░░░░░░░░ partisan split And the ░░░░░░░░ is a lot of ░░░░░░░░ don t understand that ░░░░░░░░ our polling what we ░░░░░░░░ seen is we asked ░░░░░░░░ two questions to understand ░░░░░░░░ voters understood how this ░░░░░░░░ going to be decided ░░░░░░░░ first question is which ░░░░░░░░ matters The primary or ░░░░░░░░ general The second question ░░░░░░░░ asked was how are ░░░░░░░░ going to vote Are ░░░░░░░░ going to use rank ░░░░░░░░ voting standard voting how ░░░░░░░░ this election be operated ░░░░░░░░ was two thirds of ░░░░░░░░ who could not answer ░░░░░░░░ questions directly and we ░░░░░░░░ just a few weeks ░░░░░░░░ from the election So ░░░░░░░░ before we go I ░░░░░░░░ let you kind of ░░░░░░░░ the race here and ░░░░░░░░ you re looking for ░░░░░░░░ it s only a ░░░░░░░░ from Saturday is Election ░░░░░░░░ Just over four weeks ░░░░░░░░ Eric Adams is out ░░░░░░░░ top in a new ░░░░░░░░ Andrew Yang as well ░░░░░░░░ got a lot of ░░░░░░░░ attention frankly because a ░░░░░░░░ of national media just ░░░░░░░░ who he was He ░░░░░░░░ come down a little ░░░░░░░░ from those early days ░░░░░░░░ Scott Stringer the former ░░░░░░░░ borough president now the ░░░░░░░░ in New York What ░░░░░░░░ you going to be ░░░░░░░░ for in these last ░░░░░░░░ weeks or so It ░░░░░░░░ be interesting to see ░░░░░░░░ anyone makes a late ░░░░░░░░ And Katherine Garcia is ░░░░░░░░ the person bst set ░░░░░░░░ to do that if ░░░░░░░░ was going to seal ░░░░░░░░ election up that would ░░░░░░░░ happened already At this ░░░░░░░░ I would rather be ░░░░░░░░ Adams than anybody else ░░░░░░░░ s been creeping up ░░░░░░░░ the polls and Yang ░░░░░░░░ been stagnant or falling ░░░░░░░░ the last several polls ░░░░░░░░ have been publicly released ░░░░░░░░ CEOs and founders of ░░░░░░░░ data and analytics company ░░░░░░░░ cart Sasha samotin and ░░░░░░░░ Collins This has been ░░░░░░░░ exciting episode of New ░░░░░░░░ one and I ve ░░░░░░░░ pat Kiernan Thank you ░░░░░░░░ much guys Good to ░░░░░░░░ you.
