Miami Mayor Says He Disagrees with Gov. Desantis’ Controversial ‘Pro-Law Enforcement’ Law

BERMAN Look your colleague ░░░░░░░░ mayor of Tallahassee says ░░░░░░░░ law would allow someone ░░░░░░░░ be arrested for simply ░░░░░░░░ in a protest where ░░░░░░░░ happens to occur What ░░░░░░░░ your opinion of the ░░░░░░░░ SUAREZ Well my opinion ░░░░░░░░ the law is I ░░░░░░░░ not sure why it ░░░░░░░░ necessary You know we ░░░░░░░░ obviously civil disturbances last ░░░░░░░░ and there wasn t ░░░░░░░░ you know sort of ░░░░░░░░ rioting We had one ░░░░░░░░ out of two weeks ░░░░░░░░ protesting where we had ░░░░░░░░ arrests We were able ░░░░░░░░ do it with the ░░░░░░░░ that we had We ░░░░░░░░ have some defacing of ░░░░░░░░ but we were able ░░░░░░░░ catch the people that ░░░░░░░░ them We were able ░░░░░░░░ arrest those people for ░░░░░░░░ property under the current ░░░░░░░░ that we had And ░░░░░░░░ we were able to ░░░░░░░░ you know those protest ░░░░░░░░ were by the way ░░░░░░░░ and large extremely peaceful ░░░░░░░░ they were done in ░░░░░░░░ public view In other ░░░░░░░░ they were done in ░░░░░░░░ streets We allowed protesters ░░░░░░░░ go out and express ░░░░░░░░ We set very clear ░░░░░░░░ And I would say ░░░░░░░░ was 99 percent compliance ░░░░░░░░ those rules Were there ░░░░░░░░ that crossed the line ░░░░░░░░ And when they did ░░░░░░░░ arrested them and we ░░░░░░░░ we brought them to ░░░░░░░░ So the question is ░░░░░░░░ is the need for ░░░░░░░░ sort of enhanced set ░░░░░░░░ rules when the rules ░░░░░░░░ had worked perfectly fine ░░░░░░░░ frankly there wasn t ░░░░░░░░ real rioting in any ░░░░░░░░ city in Florida So ░░░░░░░░ just don t understand ░░░░░░░░ the need was to ░░░░░░░░ the laws on the ░░░░░░░░ that we use and ░░░░░░░░ we use effectively BERMAN ░░░░░░░░ be clear you say ░░░░░░░░ don t understand why ░░░░░░░░ s necessary You disagree ░░░░░░░░ Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ░░░░░░░░ this SUAREZ Yes to ░░░░░░░░ to be clear like ░░░░░░░░ said number one there ░░░░░░░░ t any rioting in ░░░░░░░░ city and certainly not ░░░░░░░░ the state of Florida ░░░░░░░░ two any kind of ░░░░░░░░ or any kind of ░░░░░░░░ of the law we ░░░░░░░░ able to handle with ░░░░░░░░ the current set of ░░░░░░░░ that we had So ░░░░░░░░ don t understand what ░░░░░░░░ the need to change ░░░░░░░░ laws on the books ░░░░░░░░ wasn t any need ░░░░░░░░ example for The National ░░░░░░░░ never came to any ░░░░░░░░ our cities We were ░░░░░░░░ BERMAN He says let ░░░░░░░░ ask you Governor DeSantis ░░░░░░░░ he says it was ░░░░░░░░ to battle what he ░░░░░░░░ the tactics of the ░░░░░░░░ left That s what ░░░░░░░░ says Do you find ░░░░░░░░ framing politically divisive SUAREZ ░░░░░░░░ I mean were there ░░░░░░░░ that came to our ░░░░░░░░ that were probably paid ░░░░░░░░ protest or were paid ░░░░░░░░ create havoc I m ░░░░░░░░ there were But that ░░░░░░░░ not the point The ░░░░░░░░ is that whether or ░░░░░░░░ they were there to ░░░░░░░░ chaos or whether or ░░░░░░░░ they were there to ░░░░░░░░ to create division in ░░░░░░░░ community it didn t ░░░░░░░░ a and b we ░░░░░░░░ able to handle it ░░░░░░░░ the laws that we ░░░░░░░░ You know to the ░░░░░░░░ that there was any ░░░░░░░░ of lawlessness in our ░░░░░░░░ frankly it was that ░░░░░░░░ got onto our expressways ░░░░░░░░ that s state jurisdiction ░░░░░░░░ Right SUAREZ So I ░░░░░░░░ the state could have ░░░░░░░░ a better job of ░░░░░░░░ you know our highways ░░░░░░░░ their jurisdiction That s ░░░░░░░░ that we prepared for ░░░░░░░░ hopefully it will not ░░░░░░░░ again in the future ░░░░░░░░ their — with their collaboration.”
