Rob Reiner: ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Shows the Dangers of Deregulation

REINER I mean it ░░░░░░░░ is a wonderful morality ░░░░░░░░ that points the finger ░░░░░░░░ what happens when you ░░░░░░░░ capitalism when you leave ░░░░░░░░ markets unchecked And Jordan ░░░░░░░░ is the epitome of ░░░░░░░░ He is taking excess ░░░░░░░░ excess WAGNER Did you ░░░░░░░░ time on Wall Street ░░░░░░░░ prepare for this to ░░░░░░░░ sort of acclimated REINER ░░░░░░░░ didn t spend time ░░░░░░░░ Wall Street but I ░░░░░░░░ get to meet Jordan ░░░░░░░░ And he s a ░░░░░░░░ character I mean he ░░░░░░░░ very charismatic and you ░░░░░░░░ see why he s ░░░░░░░░ he can you ll ░░░░░░░░ at the end of ░░░░░░░░ movie because it starts ░░░░░░░░ the beginning he says ░░░░░░░░ me this pen He ░░░░░░░░ you can sell anybody ░░░░░░░░ if you re persuasive ░░░░░░░░ And he basically took ░░░░░░░░ single opportunity and every ░░░░░░░░ that he could find ░░░░░░░░ make an enormous amount ░░░░░░░░ money It s a ░░░░░░░░ statement on what happened ░░░░░░░░ the 80s and how ░░░░░░░░ economy collapsed when you ░░░░░░░░ things WAGNER Well and ░░░░░░░░ mean part of it ░░░░░░░░ his incredible story After ░░░░░░░░ out of dental school ░░░░░░░░ sold frozen lobsters and ░░░░░░░░ door to door He ░░░░░░░░ his own helicopter only ░░░░░░░░ to crash it I ░░░░░░░░ t say it s ░░░░░░░░ rags to riches story ░░░░░░░░ guy came up But ░░░░░░░░ once he got there ░░░░░░░░ the way he got ░░░░░░░░ was on the backs ░░░░░░░░ others and was through ░░░░░░░░ the enormity of the ░░░░░░░░ was breathtaking REINER Yes ░░░░░░░░ he paid a price ░░░░░░░░ know the character I ░░░░░░░░ I play Jordan s ░░░░░░░░ you know Leonardo DiCaprio ░░░░░░░░ Jordan Belfort I play ░░░░░░░░ Belfort who they call ░░░░░░░░ Max who gets crazy ░░░░░░░░ all this stuff And ░░░░░░░░ first my character was ░░░░░░░░ of proud of him ░░░░░░░░ he was making money ░░░░░░░░ was being successful Then ░░░░░░░░ realizes what this guy ░░░░░░░░ doing and he realizes ░░░░░░░░ I say in the ░░░░░░░░ it s obscene It ░░░░░░░░ obscene and I say ░░░░░░░░ him Jordy you made ░░░░░░░░ the money in the ░░░░░░░░ now you need to ░░░░░░░░ everybody else s money ░░░░░░░░ s like a father ░░░░░░░░ his son run into ░░░░░░░░ street with the oncoming ░░░░░░░░ and you know he ░░░░░░░░ going to get hit ░░░░░░░░ he s going to ░░░░░░░░ hit hard and you ░░░░░░░░ helpless You can t ░░░░░░░░ anything And he does ░░░░░░░░ hit and he goes ░░░░░░░░ jail WAGNER It is ░░░░░░░░ timely film for this ░░░░░░░░ in particular REINER Yes ░░░░░░░░ it s funny It ░░░░░░░░ funny WAGNER Yes which ░░░░░░░░ can see from that ░░░░░░░░ Rob it is always ░░░░░░░░ pleasure to see you ░░░░░░░░ re so excited to ░░░░░░░░ see this movie as ░░░░░░░░ team with popcorn REINER ░░░░░░░░ you re going to ░░░░░░░░ fun WAGNER I know ░░░░░░░░ always will I love ░░░░░░░░ movies.”
