Rangel: ‘We Have a Problem of Racism in This Country’

D AZ BALART How ░░░░░░░░ you interpret the grand ░░░░░░░░ decision and what are ░░░░░░░░ constituents telling you RANGEL ░░░░░░░░ is impossible to believe ░░░░░░░░ are involved now whether ░░░░░░░░ talk about the Department ░░░░░░░░ Justice or what happened ░░░░░░░░ Staten Island with a ░░░░░░░░ for the truth If ░░░░░░░░ were just to look ░░░░░░░░ this and see a ░░░░░░░░ dozen people in uniform ░░░░░░░░ a person of color ░░░░░░░░ s saying Please don ░░░░░░░░ kill me I can ░░░░░░░░ breathe And then they ░░░░░░░░ into a room a ░░░░░░░░ jury room and say ░░░░░░░░ nobody did anything wrong ░░░░░░░░ just is shocking thing ░░░░░░░░ happen So we re ░░░░░░░░ to find out what ░░░░░░░░ in that room But ░░░░░░░░ are two big things ░░░░░░░░ First of all we ░░░░░░░░ have to admit as ░░░░░░░░ country as a great ░░░░░░░░ that we have a ░░░░░░░░ of racism in this ░░░░░░░░ That s the long ░░░░░░░░ problem In the short ░░░░░░░░ we have to say ░░░░░░░░ you re standing by ░░░░░░░░ someone is committing a ░░░░░░░░ whether or not you ░░░░░░░░ in uniform or not ░░░░░░░░ you have a moral ░░░░░░░░ legal obligation to step ░░░░░░░░ The whole idea of ░░░░░░░░ immunity to those people ░░░░░░░░ was witnessed in a ░░░░░░░░ act doesn t make ░░░░░░░░ sense at all D ░░░░░░░░ BALART Congressman I m ░░░░░░░░ the president talked about ░░░░░░░░ the mayor of New ░░░░░░░░ is now bringing in ░░░░░░░░ cameras for cops but ░░░░░░░░ didn t really make ░░░░░░░░ difference here because we ░░░░░░░░ to see it RANGEL ░░░░░░░░ bet your life And ░░░░░░░░ whole lot of white ░░░░░░░░ are saying it s ░░░░░░░░ kids today could be ░░░░░░░░ tomorrow We re talking ░░░░░░░░ about freedom of expression ░░░░░░░░ this is not only ░░░░░░░░ constitutional right We re ░░░░░░░░ about a moral right ░░░░░░░░ live in a country ░░░░░░░░ fear of being unfairly ░░░░░░░░ whether people are in ░░░░░░░░ or not So really ░░░░░░░░ I don t understand ░░░░░░░░ why the spiritual community ░░░░░░░░ heard their voices there ░░░░░░░░ the civil rights movement ░░░░░░░░ why all the silence ░░░░░░░░ not to indict policemen ░░░░░░░░ you see it s ░░░░░░░░ in a country to ░░░░░░░░ at somebody and have ░░░░░░░░ dual standard in how ░░░░░░░░ re treated because of ░░░░░░░░ language their accent or ░░░░░░░░ color This is morally ░░░░░░░░ The rules we make ░░░░░░░░ come from that D ░░░░░░░░ BALART You and I ░░░░░░░░ spoken about this in ░░░░░░░░ past The fact is ░░░░░░░░ really conversations about this ░░░░░░░░ are touchy tough to ░░░░░░░░ about many times don ░░░░░░░░ really occur in our ░░░░░░░░ in society until something ░░░░░░░░ happens Where is this ░░░░░░░░ going when something like ░░░░░░░░ isn t happening because ░░░░░░░░ is only when the ░░░░░░░░ continues that we can ░░░░░░░░ any real progress RANGEL ░░░░░░░░ where it should start ░░░░░░░░ when a kid is ░░░░░░░░ It amazes me how ░░░░░░░░ can say and no ░░░░░░░░ can challenge that when ░░░░░░░░ child is born in ░░░░░░░░ country or any place ░░░░░░░░ the world it has ░░░░░░░░ idea who to hate ░░░░░░░░ to discriminate against or ░░░░░░░░ color is popular which ░░░░░░░░ is not It is ░░░░░░░░ that makes people like ░░░░░░░░ and we have to ░░░░░░░░ it is the wrong ░░░░░░░░ to do D AZ ░░░░░░░░ Yeah Look there s ░░░░░░░░ saying children are a ░░░░░░░░ s message to the ░░░░░░░░ they will not see ░░░░░░░░ s the future we ░░░░░░░░ bringing up in our ░░░░░░░░ RANGEL Well one thing ░░░░░░░░ can t point fingers ░░░░░░░░ other countries and ignore ░░░░░░░░ fact that we have ░░░░░░░░ problem here Can we ░░░░░░░░ it tomorrow No it ░░░░░░░░ going to take a ░░░░░░░░ time because it s ░░░░░░░░ to explain how we ░░░░░░░░ take human beings treat ░░░░░░░░ like animals and have ░░░░░░░░ as slaves And it ░░░░░░░░ a long time even ░░░░░░░░ get to the point ░░░░░░░░ we recognize that we ░░░░░░░░ civil rights and voting ░░░░░░░░ so it is going ░░░░░░░░ take some time But ░░░░░░░░ cannot win this thing ░░░░░░░░ a moral standpoint unless ░░░░░░░░ admit that you have ░░░░░░░░ problem And so I ░░░░░░░░ hopeful that as we ░░░░░░░░ mixed people coming out ░░░░░░░░ this is wrong that ░░░░░░░░ will find too police ░░░░░░░░ and others saying don ░░░░░░░░ put me there because ░░░░░░░░ know we that can ░░░░░░░░ live without the dedication ░░░░░░░░ courage of law enforcement ░░░░░░░░ D AZ BALART That ░░░░░░░░ right RANGEL and the ░░░░░░░░ that they take But ░░░░░░░░ they stand by and ░░░░░░░░ among themselves people that ░░░░░░░░ violating people s human ░░░░░░░░ they should be made ░░░░░░░░ stand up and say ░░░░░░░░ is wrong thing to ░░░░░░░░
