Highland Park, Ill. Mayor: Our Assault Weapons Ban Should Be a Template for Others

ANCHOR Nancy Rotering Mayor ░░░░░░░░ you so much for ░░░░░░░░ here I know that ░░░░░░░░ s been a busy ░░░░░░░░ days for you as ░░░░░░░░ try to process all ░░░░░░░░ this I understand the ░░░░░░░░ president was in Highland ░░░░░░░░ saying enough is enough ░░░░░░░░ do you feel like ░░░░░░░░ be enough ROTERING Frankly ░░░░░░░░ think what will be ░░░░░░░░ is to get these ░░░░░░░░ of war out of ░░░░░░░░ country There s no ░░░░░░░░ for any kind of ░░░░░░░░ with this kind of ░░░░░░░░ to be accessible to ░░░░░░░░ public These are weapons ░░░░░░░░ should be handled by ░░░░░░░░ military And given the ░░░░░░░░ the violence and and ░░░░░░░░ pain that this community ░░░░░░░░ going through and others ░░░░░░░░ gone through in the ░░░░░░░░ I think at some ░░░░░░░░ we need to have ░░░░░░░░ conversation that says who ░░░░░░░░ the right to have ░░░░░░░░ like this available when ░░░░░░░░ rest of us are ░░░░░░░░ in fear that something ░░░░░░░░ this may come to ░░░░░░░░ front door And it ░░░░░░░░ ANCHOR And mayor I ░░░░░░░░ like that is common ░░░░░░░░ to think we don ░░░░░░░░ want to be petrified ░░░░░░░░ go to any open ░░░░░░░░ like a parade celebrating ░░░░░░░░ independence and really just ░░░░░░░░ innocence that was there ░░░░░░░░ the stroller seeing the ░░░░░░░░ And Highland Park was ░░░░░░░░ of this I believe ░░░░░░░░ terms of banning certain ░░░░░░░░ powered rifles after Sandy ░░░░░░░░ but it wasn t ░░░░░░░░ because if a person ░░░░░░░░ to do this they ░░░░░░░░ get that high powered ░░░░░░░░ elsewhere ROTERING Exactly And ░░░░░░░░ that passage of the ░░░░░░░░ weapons ban and large ░░░░░░░░ magazine ban that we ░░░░░░░░ through in 2013 should ░░░░░░░░ a template for others ░░░░░░░░ I ve been working ░░░░░░░░ 2018 to get the ░░░░░░░░ of Illinois to allow ░░░░░░░░ cities to have that ░░░░░░░░ through a weird twist ░░░░░░░░ the way that we ░░░░░░░░ able to do that ░░░░░░░░ was only a 10 ░░░░░░░░ window for cities in ░░░░░░░░ to pass the assault ░░░░░░░░ bans That state preemption ░░░░░░░░ to be removed and ░░░░░░░░ ve been working on ░░░░░░░░ But I think frankly ░░░░░░░░ this point given that ░░░░░░░░ am surrounded by states ░░░░░░░░ much more lacks gun ░░░░░░░░ it needs to be ░░░░░░░░ national conversation We know ░░░░░░░░ folks can go anywhere ░░░░░░░░ and can make sure ░░░░░░░░ they can get assault ░░░░░░░░ from Indiana from Missouri ░░░░░░░░ come into Illinois and ░░░░░░░░ s just got to ░░░░░░░░ I ve heard from ░░░░░░░░ many mayors across this ░░░░░░░░ who have gone through ░░░░░░░░ same horror Nobody needs ░░░░░░░░ live in fear We ░░░░░░░░ supposed to be celebrating ░░░░░░░░ Now I have people ░░░░░░░░ are furious and pained ░░░░░░░░ are going through such ░░░░░░░░ sorrow.”
