REPORTER: “How do you respond to the criticism that the administration’s posture towards Fox News constitutes some sort of bullying or chilling of speech, specifically the comments by Anita Dunn about Fox not being a real news network?”
GIBBS: “I have watched many stories on that network that I found not to be true.”
(...)
OBAMA: “The vast majority of folks like their coverage. The vast majority of folks are satisfied with their choices of doctors and hospitals. People like what we’ve done. The people who are actually using it, not just the people who are hearing about it on Fox News.”
(...)
OBAMA: “The ability of Republican leaders to rile up their base, helped along by folks like Rush Limbaugh and some commentators on Fox News, created an environment in which Republican voters would punish Republicans for cooperating with me. That hothouse of back and forth argument has been harmful to the country.”
(...)
OBAMA: “If I watched Fox News I wouldn’t vote for me either, you know, because you’ve got this screen, this funhouse mirror through which people are receiving information.”
(...)
OBAMA: “And now that the government is reopened and this threat to our economy is removed, all of us need to stop focusing on the lobbyists and the bloggers and the talking heads on radio.”
(...)
OBAMA: “The corrosive nature of everything from talk radio to fake news...”
(...)
OBAMA: “We listen to a bunch of hooey on TV or talk radio that doesn’t really tell the truth of what’s going on.”
(...)
REPORTER: “You said you don’t want the journalists to go to jail as long as you’re attorney general. Why not drop that case?”
HOLDER: “I think that case was appropriately charged. It is a case that we intend to see through to the end.”
(...)
OBAMA: “We’re going to have to rebuild within this Wild, Wild West of information flow some sort of curating function.”
(...)
OBAMA: “It’s the story that is broadcast every day on some cable news stations, on right-wing radio. It is pumped into cars and bars. And if you’re hearing that story all the time you start believing it. It’s no wonder people think big government is the problem. No wonder public support for unions is so low. No wonder that people think the deficit has gone up under my presidency when it’s actually gone down. No wonder that they did a survey and a lot of white Americans think reverse discrimination is as big a problem as discrimination against minorities.”
(...)
OBAMA: “If fake news that’s being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan news venues then it’s not surprising that that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect because it doesn’t seem that farfetched compared to some of the other stuff that folks are hearing from domestic propagandists.”
