CABRERA Our next guest ░░░░░░░░ a longtime advocate for ░░░░░░░░ from Haiti her homeland ░░░░░░░░ Bastien is the executive ░░░░░░░░ of Family Action Network ░░░░░░░░ Thank you for being ░░░░░░░░ us You ve been ░░░░░░░░ critical of what is ░░░░░░░░ to Haitian migrants at ░░░░░░░░ border and so as ░░░░░░░░ Haitian immigrant to the ░░░░░░░░ S yourself how do ░░░░░░░░ images impact you What ░░░░░░░░ going through your mind ░░░░░░░░ now BASTIEN Thank you ░░░░░░░░ for having me These ░░░░░░░░ brought back memories of ░░░░░░░░ years ago when we ░░░░░░░░ fighting for the basic ░░░░░░░░ of due process of ░░░░░░░░ refugees who were coming ░░░░░░░░ masse in the early ░░░░░░░░ We witnessed I witnessed ░░░░░░░░ I can still see ░░░░░░░░ in my mind s ░░░░░░░░ police officers mounted on ░░░░░░░░ big horses and basically ░░░░░░░░ those of who were ░░░░░░░░ on the street and ░░░░░░░░ people had to fall ░░░░░░░░ you know in order ░░░░░░░░ to be trampled by ░░░░░░░░ horses So this these ░░░░░░░░ brought back painful memories ░░░░░░░░ the past CABRERA As ░░░░░░░░ know the immigration system ░░░░░░░░ in the U S ░░░░░░░░ incredibly complex It is ░░░░░░░░ right now Are Haitian ░░░░░░░░ though being treated differently ░░░░░░░░ other immigrant groups BASTIEN ░░░░░░░░ we know that of ░░░░░░░░ total amount of encounters ░░░░░░░░ the border in 2020 ░░░░░░░░ example 646 000 and ░░░░░░░░ 5 000 you know ░░░░░░░░ plus were from Haiti ░░░░░░░░ made up 8 of ░░░░░░░░ encounters at border For ░░░░░░░░ the total was 1 ░░░░░░░░ 000 and only 30 ░░░░░░░░ from Haiti which is ░░░░░░░░ than 2 So when ░░░░░░░░ see these numbers we ░░░░░░░░ say that the Haitians ░░░░░░░░ being singled out for ░░░░░░░░ treatment by the U ░░░░░░░░ government CABRERA But explain ░░░░░░░░ than that beyond the ░░░░░░░░ why do you mean ░░░░░░░░ their treatment is different ░░░░░░░░ Because Haitians are only ░░░░░░░░ small minority at the ░░░░░░░░ and yet they are ░░░░░░░░ ones being expelled illegally ░░░░░░░░ Title 42 which was ░░░░░░░░ racist policy enacted by ░░░░░░░░ Trump Administration a policy ░░░░░░░░ we thought the Biden ░░░░░░░░ will eliminate will stop ░░░░░░░░ and that not only ░░░░░░░░ is he using it ░░░░░░░░ judge ordered them stopped ░░░░░░░░ stop it and but ░░░░░░░░ Biden Administration appealed And ░░░░░░░░ a result over a ░░░░░░░░ Haitian refugees have been ░░░░░░░░ know sent to Haiti ░░░░░░░░ complete denial of their ░░░░░░░░ rights of due process ░░░░░░░░ U S is abusing ░░░░░░░░ ignoring both domestic and ░░░░░░░░ treaties that they are ░░░░░░░░ to respect in treating ░░░░░░░░ refugees inaudible refugees to ░░░░░░░░ why they are here ░░░░░░░░ the U S is ░░░░░░░░ doing that right now ░░░░░░░░ are expelling them illegally ░░░░░░░░ complete denial of their ░░░░░░░░ rights due process.”
