Eric Holder: ‘Citizens Need to Be in Streets’ Getting Arrested over Voting Rights

HOLDER You know that ░░░░░░░░ the beauty of the ░░░░░░░░ that Democrats have If ░░░░░░░░ fight for fairness if ░░░░░░░░ make sure that we ░░░░░░░░ the number of seats ░░░░░░░░ we are entitled to ░░░░░░░░ in the state legislature ░░░░░░░░ well as the House ░░░░░░░░ Representatives on the basis ░░░░░░░░ fair criteria Democrats and ░░░░░░░░ will do just fine ░░░░░░░░ have to cheat to ░░░░░░░░ And so yeah they ░░░░░░░░ try to do what ░░░░░░░░ can in Texas and ░░░░░░░░ Florida North Carolina We ░░░░░░░░ bring lawsuits if we ░░░░░░░░ to do that We ░░░░░░░░ lawsuits already in North ░░░░░░░░ that reduce the margin ░░░░░░░░ guess to 8 5 ░░░░░░░░ it was before It ░░░░░░░░ a two seat greater ░░░░░░░░ for Republicans There is ░░░░░░░░ constitutional amendment in Florida ░░░░░░░░ we will use in ░░░░░░░░ as well But there ░░░░░░░░ no need for Democrats ░░░░░░░░ do anything other than ░░░░░░░░ fight for that which ░░░░░░░░ fair If you fight ░░░░░░░░ that which is fair ░░░░░░░░ if we are successful ░░░░░░░░ that fight Democrats will ░░░░░░░░ as I said just ░░░░░░░░ We don t have ░░░░░░░░ cheat Republicans have to ░░░░░░░░ in order to win ░░░░░░░░ that s why they ░░░░░░░░ in favor of partisan ░░░░░░░░ racial gerrymandering They know ░░░░░░░░ if substantial numbers of ░░░░░░░░ vote in this increasingly ░░░░░░░░ increasingly more diverse increasingly ░░░░░░░░ rural America that they ░░░░░░░░ t stand a chance ░░░░░░░░ winning They get that ░░░░░░░░ understand that MADDOW Let ░░░░░░░░ ask you what do ░░░░░░░░ make of the direct ░░░░░░░░ strategy that is being ░░░░░░░░ by voting rights advocates ░░░░░░░░ Vice President Harris and ░░░░░░░░ Biden are very much ░░░░░░░░ support of the reforms ░░░░░░░░ The For the People ░░░░░░░░ and they ve advocated ░░░░░░░░ it We know that ░░░░░░░░ ve heard all the ░░░░░░░░ We know their position ░░░░░░░░ you re seeing increasingly ░░░░░░░░ focus by moral leaders ░░░░░░░░ arrested at the Senate ░░░░░░░░ building at the Supreme ░░░░░░░░ at the White House ░░░░░░░░ re expecting this summer ░░░░░░░░ direct action on voting ░░░░░░░░ to accelerate to where ░░░░░░░░ will be considerable civil ░░░░░░░░ outside the White House ░░░░░░░░ trying to set off ░░░░░░░░ moral alarm here What ░░░░░░░░ you make of that ░░░░░░░░ as somebody who has ░░░░░░░░ a target of that ░░░░░░░░ the past and somebody ░░░░░░░░ knows the people being ░░░░░░░░ by these activists HOLDER ░░░░░░░░ concedes nothing without demand ░░░░░░░░ too often underestimate the ░░░░░░░░ we have as regular ░░░░░░░░ citizens by marching by ░░░░░░░░ by raising our voices ░░░░░░░░ s a really important ░░░░░░░░ of the thing that ░░░░░░░░ m leading The National ░░░░░░░░ Redistricting Committee We have ░░░░░░░░ big advocacy campaign to ░░░░░░░░ American citizens involved in ░░░░░░░░ fight If we make ░░░░░░░░ voices known if we ░░░░░░░░ the kind of change ░░░░░░░░ fair change we re ░░░░░░░░ I think it will ░░░░░░░░ in the process It ░░░░░░░░ not going to probably ░░░░░░░░ Republicans I m being ░░░░░░░░ about that On the ░░░░░░░░ hand Democrats ae going ░░░░░░░░ have to think to ░░░░░░░░ do I want to ░░░░░░░░ seen as the personal ░░░░░░░░ like James Eastland those ░░░░░░░░ before who stood against ░░░░░░░░ passage of civil rights ░░░░░░░░ Do I want to ░░░░░░░░ that as my legacy ░░░░░░░░ raising the consciousness of ░░░░░░░░ by demonstrating by getting ░░░░░░░░ by doing the things ░░░░░░░░ ending segregation If you ░░░░░░░░ people back in the ░░░░░░░░ do you think marching ░░░░░░░░ will bring down a ░░░░░░░░ of American apartheid You ░░░░░░░░ would have said no ░░░░░░░░ won t happen We ░░░░░░░░ t lose faith right ░░░░░░░░ We shouldn t lose ░░░░░░░░ Citizens can make a ░░░░░░░░ Citizens need to be ░░░░░░░░ the streets Citizens need ░░░░░░░░ be demonstrating Citizens need ░░░░░░░░ be calling representatives to ░░░░░░░░ the kind of change ░░░░░░░░ will make this country ░░░░░░░░ representative make our democracy ░░░░░░░░ fair MADDOW Eric Holder ░░░░░░░░ attorney general of the ░░░░░░░░ States now chairman of ░░░░░░░░ National Democratic Redistricting Committee ░░░░░░░░ Attorney General it is ░░░░░░░░ an honor to have ░░░░░░░░ here Whenever you can ░░░░░░░░ here we ll have ░░░░░░░░ Thank you for joining ░░░░░░░░ HOLDER Thanks for having ░░░░░░░░ Rachel.”
