Rep. Lauren Underwood Blames Police for Skyrocketing Crime in Chicago

SCARBOROUGH You re so ░░░░░░░░ on those background checks ░░░░░░░░ ve been talking about ░░░░░░░░ on this show now ░░░░░░░░ a decade Support almost ░░░░░░░░ out of 10 Americans ░░░░░░░░ expanded background checks and ░░░░░░░░ many other gun laws ░░░░░░░░ safety laws But on ░░░░░░░░ policing side of the ░░░░░░░░ what do we do ░░░░░░░░ ve been reading articles ░░░░░░░░ some time I know ░░░░░░░░ ve seen it too ░░░░░░░░ officers leaving the force ░░░░░░░░ droves because they don ░░░░░░░░ feel like public officials ░░░░░░░░ their back As we ░░░░░░░░ pursue police reform what ░░░░░░░░ we do to let ░░░░░░░░ cops know to let ░░░░░░░░ police officers know on ░░░░░░░░ streets that we have ░░░░░░░░ back When they kiss ░░░░░░░░ family good night and ░░░░░░░░ get in the car ░░░░░░░░ put on the badge ░░░░░░░░ 10 00 at night ░░░░░░░░ drive through Chicago or ░░░░░░░░ or New York or ░░░░░░░░ district or my district ░░░░░░░░ do we do to ░░░░░░░░ them know we have ░░░░░░░░ back UNDERWOOD In my ░░░░░░░░ I interact with a ░░░░░░░░ of police officers Whether ░░░░░░░░ s in Washington and ░░░░░░░░ heroes on the U ░░░░░░░░ Capitol police force who ░░░░░░░░ know it was my ░░░░░░░░ colleagues who would not ░░░░░░░░ forward to fund these ░░░░░░░░ that they need to ░░░░░░░░ able to have officer ░░░░░░░░ to be able to ░░░░░░░░ these folks benefits mental ░░░░░░░░ benefits in the face ░░░░░░░░ January 6th You know ░░░░░░░░ two days ago we ░░░░░░░░ all reflecting as a ░░░░░░░░ about where we ve ░░░░░░░░ in the last six ░░░░░░░░ and the relative inaction ░░░░░░░░ s happened as a ░░░░░░░░ of Republicans digging in ░░░░░░░░ to normalize the big ░░░░░░░░ and say that it ░░░░░░░░ you know just outlandish ░░░░░░░░ they said about January ░░░░░░░░ SCARBOROUGH Right but what ░░░░░░░░ in Chicago UNDERWOOD Yes ░░░░░░░░ about in Chicago SCARBOROUGH ░░░░░░░░ about New York what ░░░░░░░░ across America UNDERWOOD We ░░░░░░░░ to be very clear ░░░░░░░░ our police officers do ░░░░░░░░ support in their jobs ░░░░░░░░ They need to be ░░░░░░░░ to have the full ░░░░░░░░ and pay and all ░░░░░░░░ stuff Right these are ░░░░░░░░ jobs that they have ░░░░░░░░ we also have to ░░░░░░░░ very clear that it ░░░░░░░░ unacceptable that folks continue ░░░░░░░░ die at the hand ░░░░░░░░ law enforcement in this ░░░░░░░░ That s what policing ░░░░░░░░ is about I think ░░░░░░░░ we re muddling the ░░░░░░░░ here What we have ░░░░░░░░ in the spike in ░░░░░░░░ is not because the ░░░░░░░░ States Congress is taking ░░░░░░░░ to reform policing in ░░░░░░░░ country to make it ░░░░░░░░ equitable to make it ░░░░░░░░ and safe in all ░░░░░░░░ our communities What we ░░░░░░░░ seeing is a set ░░░░░░░░ laws in this country ░░░░░░░░ continue to allow as ░░░░░░░░ Al said guns that ░░░░░░░░ t be on the ░░░░░░░░ to be on the ░░░░░░░░ that continue to allow ░░░░░░░░ to purchase weapons of ░░░░░░░░ and use them freely ░░░░░░░░ we continue to see ░░░░░░░░ you know people are ░░░░░░░░ about committing acts of ░░░░░░░░ and it has been ░░░░░░░░ Violence of any kind ░░░░░░░░ unacceptable SCARBOROUGH You said ░░░░░░░░ re muddling the issue ░░░░░░░░ What issue are we ░░░░░░░░ What issue am I ░░░░░░░░ UNDERWOOD I believe that ░░░░░░░░ issue of policing reform ░░░░░░░░ very specific issues like ░░░░░░░░ chokeholds holding bad police ░░░░░░░░ accountable shining a light ░░░░░░░░ transparency figuring out a ░░░░░░░░ to make sure that ░░░░░░░░ who are committing crimes ░░░░░░░░ on the job are ░░░░░░░░ responsible that we are ░░░░░░░░ that and being really ░░░░░░░░ and concrete about how ░░░░░░░░ is a separate issue ░░░░░░░░ people dying on the ░░░░░░░░ every day across this ░░░░░░░░ Those are completely different ░░░░░░░░
