James Baker: I Don’t See Tillerson’s Close Relationship with Putin as a ‘Disqualifier’

‘I think you’re going to find that he will be a very effective and formidable secretary of state for the United States’

BAKER: "It’s one thing to be CEO of a major corporation where your number one responsibility is to create worth for your shareholders. You deal sometimes with very authoritarian people because your number one goal is to create value for your shareholders. You have a different responsibility as a government official and particularly as secretary of state. You know, I came to the secretary of state’s job primarily from government because I’d been chief of staff at the White House and Treasury secretary first. But I had been a lawyer representing clients, big corporate clients, who might have had interests that were adverse to the United States from time to time. But I just don’t see this as a disqualifier."
