Rep. Moore: ‘Oligarch,’ ‘Enemy’ GOP Denying My Constituent’s Ability to Shop

‘Appeal to people like Boehner to extend the unemployment benefits — Because Sherice wants to shop’

"My name is Gwen Moore, from the state of Wisconsin. We have about 55,100 unemployed folk in my community. I was so touched by what Kimberly had to say because not only she the face of the unemployed, but she is also the face of the people that the oligarchs are aiming to bring down, and force her into the low wage workforce when she has no pension, she has no savings, she is qualified, and they are trying to force her into the $2.17 an hour, hoping that she can be pleasant enough get some tips -- workforce -- when she reaches that point of desperation. Because our enemies don’t like the minimum wage at all, much less $10.10. They don’t like any minimum wage at all.  I have such a constituent who is not the lazy unemployed person. She has -- 150 job applications later, she’s lost her job 18 years, she’s lived in a house since 1986 and does not know how to pay, has not paid April rent, and doesn't know how to pay rent going forward."

The other side of this is that – I saw Sherice standing in the crowd. Sherice, come forward with your sign. She’s selling her clothes to survive. The side of this -- and Kimberley raised this point -- is that we’re destroying our economy by not providing unemployment benefits. Sherice would be at H&M after work today if she had her unemployment check. So retailers all over the world, all over the country, are not making their bottom line because these benefits are not out there. And that is why we have folks like the chamber of commerce, trying to appeal to people like Boehner to extend the unemployment benefits. Because Sherice wants to shop."
