Rep. Gohmert Pushes Legislation to Allow Gun Permits on Military Bases

‘You can’t hire enough military police to do the good that our military, qualified with weapons every year, could do if they just had the right to have a weapon’

GOHMERT: "Neil, it would just allow soldiers to do, like at Fort Hood, what they can do if the step one inch outside of Fort Hood into civilian territory, because there was mass shooting in Killen at a cafeteria years ago, Texas allowed a concealed carry permit. And you know, we've talked about it with different people and military, nonmilitary, and I'd like -- we want the bill to leave tote the military's discretion where they allow concealed carry or open carry -- but let the military or force the military to allow permits because you had mentioned military police, more military police, with my dear friend Allen West that I voted for speaker, and the thing is you can't hire enough military police to do the good that our military qualified with weapons every year, could do if they just had the right to have a weapon."
CAVUTO: "Well what would be the middle ground, sir? I guess what I was trying to get at -- the good colonel your former colleague -- is if you don't want to arm all 80,000 and I can see that, of course that includes ancillary personnel. How many should? If we have, let's say, 100 MPs on a given base at a given time, should it be 200, 300, 400, a thousand?"
GOHMERT: "We can't afford enough MPs, and these people are qualified with weapons anyway. They drop thousands of pounds of weapons from airplanes, they fire tanks, and you can't trust them with a pistol? The thing is the middle ground is to allow those who apply for a permit and meet the requirements, qualify, and don't have mental history of assaultive, offensive, UCMJ offenses, assaultive in nature, you have them qualified, then they are allowed to carry a weapon. So you don't have 80,000 people carrying a weapon but people are permitted to carry."
CAVUTO: "Got you."
GOHMERT: "And that would be enough to keep people from going nuts and shooting."
