State Dept.: ‘We Are Not Opening up Some New Burgeoning Relationship with Iran’

‘We still have significant issues with the way Iran is behaving in the region’

KIRBY: "Our relationship with Iran, that’s — that’s a pretty unique way of putting it. We still — we don’t have diplomatic relations with Iran. Right now, the single conduit between us and Iran is Secretary Kerry and his relationship with Foreign Minister Zarif — he’s going to meet with him later this afternoon, as a matter of fact. And to the degree that the Iran deal can help Iran become a more constructive player in the region, well, that’s a good thing. That wasn’t the goal, but that’s a good thing. And we understand that many GCC nations, not just Saudi Arabia, are concerned about where things are going with Iran. We are not opening up some new burgeoning relationship with Iran, that we still have significant issues with the way Iran is behaving in the region."
