Sasse: Trump ‘Doesn’t Have Any More Core Principles than a Kardashian Marriage’

‘I think the American people are angry’

BRZEZINSKI: “All right, 45 past the hour. Joining us now, Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska. He says he will not support Donald Trump if he wins the nomination.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Well, I mean, you know what? I mean, the senator suggests that. He hints around the corner.” [crosstalk]
BRZEZINSKI: “Yeah.”
SCARBOROUGH: “He maybe a little nibble here. A nibble there.”
BRZEZINSKI: “It’s not like he’s, you know, punting on this.”
SCARBOROUGH: “I think that really we need to dig a little bit deeper.”
BRZEZINSKI: “OK.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Let me try this again. I tried something like this with Rick Santorum. We’ll see if he beats around the bush. Senator, is there any way you could support Donald Trump?”
SASSE: “Given who this guy is now, I can’t see how we think that. I don’t think this guy has any more core principles than a Kardashian marriage.”
SCARBOROUGH: “OK. So, there we go. So he just answered that.”
BRZEZINSKI: “Whoa. You said given who this guy is now.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Could he grow?”
SCARBOROUGH: “Could he evolve? Could he pivot?”
SASSE: “Joe, Do any of you believe Donald Trump has core principles?
SCARBOROUGH: “No, no, we’re asking you the question. Do you think he can evolve? What we’re doing now is dissecting your answer. Can he evolve into somebody that you could support?”
SASSE: “I don’t think it’s conceivable. I think the American people are angry. They have a right to be angry, and they want to scream no about Washington — I get that. But they’re going to want more choices than two fundamentally dishonest New York liberals. I’m not voting for either of these two people.”
SCARBOROUGH: “OK. So, you’ve talked about —“
BRZEZINSKI: “That’s pretty equivocal.”
SCARBOROUGH: “You knew it’s equivocal. I mean, I knew he was equivocal before, I was just kind of having fun. Obviously, I’m the only one laughing at my jokes this morning — it’s a sad morning. So, tell me senator who is a conservative — a constitutional conservative, I heard you talked about this yesterday, that you would like to see run against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton?”
SASSE: “So, I get the name game and why that might be a little bit fun. But let’s —“
SCARBOROUGH: “No, it’s not — it’s not a name game.”
BRZEZINSKI: “Serious business.”
SCARBOROUGH: “This is really serious business if you’re talking about the future of the Republican Party. Who are some people you would like to think about running? I am not playing games here.”
SASSE: “First of all we have two really good candidates who have a chance to win. So I hopefully the American people pick Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz. Let’s start with that. We’re — you know, we’re at the first day of March, we’re nine months away from an election. I think this is a lot more like 1860 than most people realize. So, a lot of people want to pretend this is November 3rd or 4th already — it’s not. The American people are going to want more choices than two dishonest New York liberals. [crosstalk] So, that’s what they have now.”
