Donald Trump created an ecclesiastical kerfuffle Monday after awkwardly attempting to cite scripture he “loves.” Speaking to students at Liberty University, the 2016 Republican front-runner said, “I hear this is a major theme right here: Two Corinthians, right, 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame! ‘Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.’”

“And here there is Liberty College, Liberty University,” he added.

“Is that the one you like?” Trump asked. “Because I loved it.”

But this was hardly Trump’s first uncertain theological foray on the campaign trail.

In a July sit-down interview with Frank Luntz, Trump appeared to be caught off-guard when Luntz asked if he’s ever sought God’s forgiveness.

“I’m not sure I have,” the twice-divorced real estate magnate responded. ”I just go and try to do a better job from there.”

On Sunday, CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Trump whether this admission was a mistake.

“No, I have a great relationship with God,” Trump replied. “I have a great relationship with evangelicals,” citing polls to prove his support.

Asked in a Bloomberg interview if he has a favorite biblical passage, Trump said, “that’s personal.”

“Are you an Old Testament or a New Testament guy?” the host followed up.

“Equal,” he said. “I think the Bible is something very special,” the only book superior to his "The Art of the Deal."
