W.H. on Critics of Obama Speech: Address Wasn’t Meant for ‘W.H. Correspondents’

‘The purpose of the speech last night was to speak directly to the American people not to lay out new policy ... the audience was not the White House correspondents’

RUSH TRANSCRIPT:

ROBERTS: "Jen Psaki joins me now, the White House communications director. Let's dive right into this. It's not just the Republicans out there. There are Democrats who are concerned about the president's speech last night finding it somewhat comforting that it came from the oval office but there wasn't a lot of newness to what the president was laying out in his plan. What are the specifics to the strategy this white house is taking to defeat ISIS, especially when it comes to an instance of home-grown terrorism?"
PSAKI: "Well, you heard the president talk about this last night but let me first say the purpose of the speech last night was to speak directly to the american people, not to lay out new policy. The audience wasn't White House correspondents. It was people who are feeling fear. They are fearful because of the events in Paris, because of what we saw in California and what he talked about last night is not just our military strategy and the components of that. that has increased over the last couple weeks. Our partners and allies have increased their efforts as well. But also efforts that we need to continue to undertake to go after their financing, to go after the messaging, to go after the growth of foreign fighters. There are components of this plan. He wanted to deliver the speech last night to speak directly about what we're doing and what we can do moving forward."
