W.H.: GOP in Congress Needs To ‘Do Their Job and Pass a Budget on Time’

‘Shutting down the government is not going to enhance our national security’

RUSH TRANSCRIPT:

"And he walked through an overview of the steps that this administration has taken on his orders over the last year to combat this threat and secure the homeland. Included in the president's comments were steps Congress could take. Let me mention one thing he did not, pass a budget on time, shutting down the government won't enhance our national security. There are also some republicans who are suggesting that they may need some additional time and therefore would pass continuing resolution to fund the government at current levels.

The fact is the reason that we don't want to fund the government at current levels is because the budget agreement includes necessary and adequate funding for our national security. So passing a continuing resolution because congress is unable to come to an agreement on the budget agreement is only going to under-fund our national security efforts. Seems like a pretty bad time to be doing that. So once again it is the responsibility of congress to step forward and do their job and pass the budget on time.

And that will require Republicans in Congress abandoning their ongoing effort to advance their ideological agenda through the budgetary proper process. There continue to be down by the repeated inclusion negotiations that are bogged on the part of republicans of ideological riders that in some cases are nothing more than earmarks to largest campaign contributors. When our national security is at stake that's not the right thing do."
