Fox News: Russia and Turkey Move One Step Closer to War

Putin: ‘After what happened yesterday, we cannot exclude any other incidents’

MCKELWAY: “Russia’s top diplomat says the shooting down of a Russian war plane by Turkey was no accident. And a man who says he’s one of the surviving pilots denies he received any warning at that he had ventured into Turkish air space. National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin has the latest tonight from the Pentagon.”

GRIFFIN (voice-over): “One day after a Turkish f-16 shot down a Russian war plane on the Syrian border, Russia and NATO member Turkey moved a step closer to war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the Turkish action was planned.”
LAVROV (as interpreted): “We have serious doubts that it was an unpremeditated act. It looks very much like a provocation.”
GRIFFIN (voice-over): “Video released by rebels on the ground shows them shooting and killing one of the Russian pilots as he parachuted to the ground. A war crime according to senior U.S. defense officials. The other Russian pilot was rescued and spoke to reporters while shielding his identity at the Russian air base in Syria, 30 miles south of the Turkish border. He vowed to return to flying to avenge his co-pilot’s death. He said their plane never entered Turkey.”
MURAKHTIN (as interpreted): “Actually, there had been no warnings, neither on the radio nor visually. There had been no contacts whatsoever. If they wanted to warn us, they could show themselves by entering parallel courses. But it didn’t happen.”
GRIFFIN (voice-over): “The Turkish air force released an audio tape of the warning.”
UNKNOWN MALE: “This is Turkish Air Force speaking. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading South immediately.”
GRIFFIN (voice-over): “The Russian plane was shot down 1.7 miles inside Syria. A senior U.S. defense official tells Fox initial indications suggest the Turkish air-to-air missile was launched while the Russian plane was in Turkish air space. But due to the missile’s flight time, about 30 seconds, it followed the Russian aircraft out of Turkish and into Syrian air space. Turkey accused the Russians of striking Syrian rebels allied with Turkey, who’re fighting the Assad regime. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the f-400 air defense system to the Russian base in Syria, whose missiles can threaten any aircraft within 250 miles. That expands into Turkey and covers most of Syria, down to Jordan and Israel.”
PUTIN (voice-over): “After what happened yesterday, we cannot exclude any other incidents. And if they occur, then we must somehow respond to it.”

GRIFFIN: “That new Russian air defense system could threaten U.S. military aircraft flying strike missions over Syria. An American planes station at Incirlik Air Base at Southern Turkey, all now within the range now within the range of Russians surfaced air missiles, Doug.”
MCKELWAY: “Thank you. Jennifer Griffin at the Pentagon.”
