Bolton: Egypt Knows Marginalizing the Muslim Brotherhood Is Key to Stability

‘This important legal step of declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization clearly opens up more avenues to weaken it in the eyes of the military’

BOLTON: “Well I think there will be a division of opinion. I think that's clear. But my guess is that the military, which has calibrated it's repression of the Brotherhood fairly carefully here, many people thought they'd never put Morsi in jail, he's still in jail. They thought they'd never bring him to trial, that's coming. That they'd never go after other Brotherhood people, that's coming too. And as far as we can tell, the bulk of the Egyptian population has accepted this. Now obviously the military can miscalculate, but this important legal step of the declaring the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization clearly opens up more avenues to weaken it in the eyes of the military. And unless you see demonstrations in Tahrir Square yet again, then I think you'd have to conclude the military has judged the mood of the population in Egypt pretty well. We'll have to see.”
