Rep. Grijalva on Detention Centers for Illegals: ‘Should Be a Family Setting’

‘They should be in a setting that is family conducive and not in a setting that is more compassion than punitive and in a prison setting’

RUSH TRANSCRIPT:

DIAZ-BALART: "Congressman, as you know, they were literally tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors that came over the border last summer. The United States has a responsibility to deal with that once they cross into the united States. Where else should they be held? What else should have happened to these people?"
GRIJALVA: "I think Doctors Saez, the Dean of College of Social Work at the University of Texas testified that there is a whole different treatment. It is a treatment in which yes, they go through a process to establish where there's credible fear. If there's credible fear, they are eligible for asylum and refugee status. But they should be with their families. They should be in a setting that is family conducive and not in a setting that is more compassion than punitive and in a prison setting, the harm it does psychogically in the long term and short term, the harm that it does do both the women and children something that the judge and the good doctor indicated there's a whole other process that assures they are going to show up for their court dates and assures that the process will be carried out with the help of attorneys and social workers. This is about helping and supporting these women and their children. It is not about detention. There shouldn't be about a prison environment."
