CBS’ Nancy Cordes: Iran Nuke Deal ‘Will Be an Uphill Sales Job’ for Obama

‘Republican leaders have openly been saying that they hope that these negotiations fail’

ROSE: “President Obama at the White House with the vice president standing beside him, announcing this historic agreement. He talks about, number one, the elimination or the throwing down of their nuclear capacity. He talks about the verification. He talks about the fact that the alternative would be unacceptable, and that he will use force in the end, if all else fails. We go now to Nancy Cordes at Capitol Hill.”

CORDES: “Good morning. Well, it is going to be an uphill sales job for this president because Republican leaders have openly been saying that they hope that these negotiations fail. One GOP lawmaker said just this morning, that the agreement lights the fuse for a nuclear arms race. Many Democrats have concerns as well and, simply put, opponents fear that a wealthier Iran after the sanctions are lifted will become a stronger, more dangerous Iran, despite some of the new restrictions on its nuclear program. A few months ago, Congress voted to give itself the power to review this deal and then vote to approve it or disapprove it. So, now, lawmakers will have 60 days to take a look at what is in this deal and to question Secretary Kerry and other negotiators, the president and other administration officials will have those 60 days to try to convince them that this is the right thing to do.”
