Bernie Sanders on Trump: What He Said Is an Outrage (Mediaite)

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has long insisted that he plans on running an entirely positive presidential campaign focused on economic issues and free from personal attacks on other candidates. But on Monday, he finally jumped on the anti-Donald Trump train.

During his remarks at the annual La Raza conference in Kansas City, Missouri, Sanders called out Trump by name. “Not Donald Trump, not anyone else will be successful in dividing us based on race or our country of origin,” he told the crowd. “Racism has plagued the United States since its inception.”

After the speech, reporters asked Sanders directly if he believes Trump is “racist.” While he did not give a yes or no answer to that question, he did deliver a harsh condemnation of Trump’s views and comments about Mexicans.

“I think that what he said is an outrage,” Sanders said of Trump, citing the great progress this country has made on racial issues. “For a major candidate for president of the United States to be throwing slurs at one group of people because of the country that they came from is totally unacceptable. Period.”
