MSNBC Guest: Absolutely, Stay-at-Home Parents Should Be Paid for Their Work, Pandemic or Not

‘We have to think about how we don’t value motherhood’

EXCERPT:

RUHLE: "Former presidential candidate, New York mayoral hopeful Andrew Yang, he proposed that stay-at-home parents should be paid for their work, pandemic or not. Do you want this basic income to be extended beyond the pandemic?"
SAUJANI: "Absolutely. I mean, we have to think about how we don’t value motherhood. We don’t value things that we don’t get for free. I mean, think about it, Stephanie, when they close the schools, did they ask us, 'Hey, do you have time to put your kids on Zoom at 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00?' No. They didn’t ask us to supplement our paid labor for unpaid labor. They just did it. And until we value mothers work, until we again put it at the center, this is going to happen over and over and over again. And every time we make gains, we're going to be pulled back. So we need to have a bigger conversation. We’re not America’s social safety net. We need structural change. We need affordable day care."
