Rep. Brady: 40% of Small Businesses Cannot Find Workers to Return to Work Because They Receive More Money to Not Work

‘Those federal benefits, which are designed to help people who are out of work, proved to be so generous that many Americans receive more money to not work than to go back to work’

EXCERPT:

RUHLE: "But many of those employers aren’t hiring again. We have seen thousands and thousands of small businesses basically give up and shut down. Will you vote to extend the $600 in weekly unemployment benefits? It’s expiring in about two weeks."
BRADY: "So two points. One, the -- the small business optimism index today is over 100. It hasn’t been that level since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondly, about 40 percent of those small businesses cannot find workers to return to work, because those federal benefits, which are designed to help people who are out of work, proved to be so generous that many Americans receive more money to not work than to go back to work, and as a result, we’re seeing — and my worry, obviously, is if that is extended, not only will we put a lot of our main street businesses at risk, this -- this recovery will be slower, and my main worry is, if workers do nothing but stay home and ride those checks out, my worry is that when they are ready to come back to work, that business may not be there. The job may not be there.”
