Yamiche Alcindor: Are Trump Supporters Going to Make Him Pay a Price for Coronavirus?

‘The President seems to be on an island on his own where he just wants to lash out’

EXCERPT:

ALCINDOR: “What I hear from my sources is that at the end of the day, the president is going to do what the president is going to do. The Coronavirus Task Force continues to meet, Anthony Fauci continues to go to the White House for those sorts of meetings, but the president seems to be on an island of his own where he wants to just lash out at anything that he feels like he wants to do. He’s very much someone, of course, who relies on his instincts, he’s very reactive. And as a result, he’s approaching the Coronavirus much like he’s approached other scandals like impeachment and other places, first calling it a hoax, then saying, ‘Actually, maybe this is really bad but I’m going to get through it, we’ll all get through it.’ In this case the question you asked, Mika, is the question of the 2020 election. Are Trump supporters going to make President Trump pay a price for the way he’s handled the Coronavirus pandemic? That’s going to be, I think, what’s going to be on the ballot. I think the sense in the White House is that’s also where this ultimately is going to lie. It’s not going to lie in polls or what the President says on a daily basis, it’s all going to come down to how voters react to the President’s thinking on this. I think it is remarkable to see that Dr. Anthony Fauci is now the person who the White House is attacking. To have Dan Scavino using his name, not an anonymous source, not somewhere in the dredges of the Internet, but on Facebook for all to see and for him to feel comfortable doing that, that means obviously he’s gotten the feeling from the President he can attack Dr. Fauci and there won’t be any repercussions.”
