Dem Rep. Raskin: Trump ‘Has Declared War on Oversight’

‘Look, this president hates oversight’

EXCERPT:

RASKIN: “Look, this president hates oversight, has declared war on oversight. He said in the Coronavirus he’ll do his own oversight which I’m sure will be reassuring to millions of Americans. Listen, we’ve got to re-establish that Congress is the law-making power. The Supreme Court has repeatedly said that a necessary requisite of our power to legislate is our power to get the information we need. As you know, President Trump has taken the position that he’ll not cooperate with congressional demands for materials. He will not cooperate with congressional subpoenas. We’re going to have to re-establish congressional power to get whatever information it is we’re asking for so that we can guarantee ethics, integrity and transparency in the Coronavirus response. But we also are going to need effective oversight to guarantee that we are on a real pathway to reopening the country the way other governments have been able to do it. But instead, the president is just careening from crisis to crisis. So this is a moment where Congress needs to step up and reassert that we’re the preeminent branch of government, the law-making branch of government, and the president must implement the laws that we put into place. For example, the Centers for Disease Control issued a whole bunch of principles and guidance for reopening which the president killed. He suppressed it, and he has not let anybody see that. Now little details have leaked out here and there. We’re going to demand, I hope, that the CDC criteria are released to the public. That the public has the right to know what the Centers for Disease Control say are the preconditions for safe reopening."
