Labor Sec. Eugene Scalia: The Stimulus Bill’s Small Business Loans Requires Businesses To Keep Their Workers on Payroll

‘So even if there has to be a pause in operations, companies get these loans, but keep paying workers’

EXCERPT:

SCALIA: “And then there's a component in this bill that I think is very good for workers. It's the small business loans which will total up to $350 billion, but they're conditioned on those companies receiving them keeping their workers on payroll. So even if there has to be a pause in operations, companies get these loans, but they keep paying their workers. So we are keeping that connection, between employer and employee. So again, when we get through this and hopefully get through it quickly, those companies and their workers can get back to work. And then finally, as you mentioned earlier, there is as heightened unemployment insurance relief to the extent we can’t keep workers attached to their employer right now. Those are I think three components that stand out most for me."
