ProPublica’s Kiel Suggests Tea Party Republicans to Blame for IRS Disproportionately Auditing Poor People

‘It started in 2010, you know, the House wave election, the Tea Party election’

EXCERPT:

KIEL: "Great question. It started in 2010, you know, the House wave election, the Tea Party election. They come in, they start trying to cut across the government and IRS was part of that. Then what happened is, you know, you may learn the Lois Lerner scandal, the scandal over how the IRS was auditing political nonprofits. That became a real focal point for House Republicans and a reason for them to keep a stranglehold on the budget. There was another big cut in 2015, it's something that on the Republican side of the aisle is not a popular idea, giving the IRS more resources, primarily because of that scandal, but also generally this is a Republican talking point that goes back decades, you know, of not liking the IRS, sometimes in sort of presidential campaigns.”
