After year’s of build up, Democrats’ campaign to impeach President Trump didn’t receive the kind of rapturous celebration many were clearly anticipating.

Once enough Democrats had voted to pass their first article of impeachment, the speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), announced that the president had officially been impeached.

The gathered Democratic lawmakers immediately broke into applause — only to be promptly rebuked from the speaker’s lectern.

Pelosi, gesturing toward her colleagues, clearly did not want Democrats to be seen celebrating.

“On this vote, the yeas are 230; the nays are 197; present is one,” Pelosi announced. “Article one is adopted.”

At that moment, Democrats started going wild, only to be quickly shushed.

Pelosi had reportedly urged lawmakers to wear black to mark this “solemn” occasion; most of the Democrats who spoke today mentioned how “sad” the vote made them [montage].
