Gordon Chang: If We Want a Trade Deal with China, We Have to ‘Hammer Them on Everything’ Including Human Rights

‘There is this notion in American policy that you can’t anger China when you want something from them’

EXCERPT:

CHANG: "There is this notion in American policy that you can’t anger China when you want something from them. It is the opposite. If you want something, you’ve got to give them a reason to deal with the reason, the united States will take a tough line in Hong Kong. I don’t we should have trade talks but most people do. If you want trade talks and an agreement with the Chinese you have to hammer them on everything, not just trade. It is this mistaken notion that American policymakers have had for four decades."
