Yamiche Alcindor: Wilbur Ross’ Comments ‘Really Took the Air out of a Lot of People’s Lungs’

‘There were so many stories of families really trying to cobble together their last pennies’

RUSH EXCERPT:

ALCINDOR: “I think that’s such an incredible moment, but it also is an example of how people were feeling, I think, all over the country. There were so many stories of families really trying to cobble together their last pennies. And you had this increasing feeling that the people that were part of this administration, including billionaire cabinet members, they just didn’t understand what was going on. Wilbur Ross’ statements that he didn’t understand why people, why federal workers, would be going to food pantries, I think, really took the air out of a lot of people’s lungs. Because thought there’s been a growing gap between the rich and the poor in this country for a long time. But it was really on display in that moment. So I think him losing it on the Senate floor in that way was really a lot of Americans saying, “We can’t take this anymore.”
