Angus King: McConnell Saying We Don’t Need to Protect Mueller Is Like Saying We Don’t Need a Fire Department Until Fire Starts

‘If Trump is innocent, then why is he firing people and continuing to attack the integrity of this investigation’

EXCERPT:

KING: “You know, Senator McConnell's been saying right along, we're not going to do this because it's not necessary. That's like saying we're not going to have a fire department until a fire starts, and you know, it's too late at this point. It would be too late if overt actions were taken to curtail or derail the Mueller investigation. This is a pretty straight forward bipartisan bill that simply says you can’t terminate the investigation in situation like this without good cause. And -- and it came out of the -- it's been reported out by the Judiciary Committee Leader McConnell could bring it up on the floor this afternoon. He could certainly bring it up after the -- the -- after Thanksgiving, but I frankly don’t understand the resistance. This is something where Congress should stand up for the independence of -- of this investigation and its importance to public confidence. The president keeps saying he's innocent. If he is innocent, then why is he firing people and continuing to attack the integrity of this -- of this investigation? It's in his best interest for the investigation to continue if indeed it will clear him of any allegation of wrongdoing in the 2016 campaign. But his actions don’t sound like somebody who has nothing to fear from the investigation."
