In his final debate before next Tuesday’s vote, Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) said that despite having a staff with blacks and Indians, they do “an amazing job.”

The awkward comments came while the incumbent senator was trying to positively portray his staff’s diversity.

“We want everybody to have a chance in Indiana and America,” Donnelly said. “And my offices reflect that, both on the campaign side and on the Senate side. Our state director is Indian-American, but he does an amazing job.”

“Our director of all constituent services, she's an African-American, but she does an even more incredible job than you could ever imagine,” he continued. “It isn't their race or their religion. It's the incredible person that they are. But at the same time, they have to have a chance. They have to have an opportunity. And that's my responsibility."

Sen. Donnelly currently trails his opponent, businessman Mike Braun, by three points, per the most recent poll
