Joe Scarborough blasted Devin Nunes on Thursday over the congressman’s newly-revealed statements about doing everything he can to protect President Trump from the ongoing investigations into Russia.

The conversations on Morning Joe revolved around the tapes Rachel Maddow obtained last night with audio of Nunes telling fellow Republicans “we’re the only ones” who can save Trump from Robert Mueller.

As Kasie Hunt noted how the tape raises questions about whether the GOP as a whole will protect Trump “at all costs,” Scarborough compared the House Intelligence Committee chairman and members of the House Freedom Caucus to the “useful idiots” who would apologize for America during the Cold War.

“We Republicans excoriated them, called them useful idiots for always apologizing for the Russians and always being part of the blame America first crowd. Well, when you look at what leaders of the Freedom Caucus are doing, when you look at what Nunes is doing, I think we need to stop saying what they’re doing is trying to protect Donald Trump, because what they’re actually doing is they’re protecting Vladimir Putin and covering up more crimes that the United States military and Intel agencies are digging at right now. They’ve unearthed some of his crimes, they’re looking for more crimes, but you have Devin Nunes bragging about trying to stop the investigation against Putin and Russia’s interference in American democracy. It’s shameful.”
