Thune: We Must Do Everything We Can to Denuclearize the Korean Peninsula

‘The president and his team so far have been very effective in doing that’

EXCERPT:

THUNE: "I just think right now Kim Jong-un and probably the hardliners in his regime are trying to gain leverage as we go into the negotiation. But this is a negotiation. And clearly we got a big win when the detainees were released. I think the president has been effective in terms of not only policy but the way he has approached North Korea. The show of force exercises that they’re reacting to is something that we’ve been doing for a long time on the peninsula. And so them all of a sudden now resisting that strikes me, at least, as an attempt to try and influence the negotiations that are upcoming. But bottom line is we need to do everything we can to try and denuclearize the Korean peninsula and bring North Korea to the table. And I think the president and his team so far have been very effective in doing that."
