Jon Meacham: Hillary’s ‘The Absolution for the People Who Took a Flier on Trump’

‘She’s the absolution for the people who took a flier on Trump and are trying to figure out if they have any justification for it’

EXCERPT:

SCARBOROUGH: "Jon Meacham, can you give us any examples of where a defeated presidential candidate is an effective tool against -- against candidates. Because I know Republicans tried to run against Jimmy Carter as long as Democrats tried to run against Herbert Hoover, but that never worked."
MEACHAM: "Right."
SCARBOROUGH: "Ronald Reagan won a landslide in 1980 and Republicans got their heads knocked off in 1982. It doesn’t work."
MEACHAM: "Right. And there are the old -- you know, the early morph ads of you’re a Teddy Kennedy liberal and then the Democrats tried to use Newt for that. I think there’s something more elemental going on. And I -- I offered this up to anybody who wants to knock it down or embrace it. I think one of the reasons — and maybe they’re not fully conscious of it — that people on the right or people in -- in Trump land would be continuing to bring up Secretary Clinton is that she’s the absolution for the people who took a flier on Trump and are trying to figure out if they have any justification for it. Because at least they can say --"
SCARBOROUGH: "Well, and Jon, by the way, that’s always —" [crosstalk]
MEACHAM: "We didn't vote for her."
