On the Friday broadcast of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, guest panelist Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) tied "budget cuts" to the ongoing Ebola crisis during a panel discussion of the virus.
"I'm pleased that the president appointed a czar," Lee said. "We've been trying to get a Surgeon General confirmed for the last 18 months and can't get him through the Senate."
"We have to remember that the budget cuts, and I have to just say it was the Republicans who cut the budget by 44% for hospital preparedness programs, cut NIH (National Institutes for Health) by over 10% and cut CDC by 17%" Lee said.
