Rep. Michael Burgess: We Can Help West Africa While Still Limiting Air Travel

‘For heaven’s sakes, can we not at least put a pause on the issuance of visas from people who are coming from those countries where the disease burden is so high?’

“Well, look there’s no reason in the world we cannot have a generous aid package to those countries that are affected by this outbreak. You heard from the World Health Organization, the other day that the case rate may be as high as 10,000 a week. In just a few weeks’ time. So there is clearly need to help and continue the ongoing on-the-ground aid. The president has made a commitment of our military to those countries that are affected, to help in building infrastructure, to get the clinics so that they’ll be available to treat the people. I have no argument with that. For heaven’s sakes, can we not at least put a pause on the issuance of visas from people who are coming from those countries where the disease burden is so high?”
