Schumer on 2018: ‘You Cannot Just Run Against Donald Trump’

‘And it is the job of we Democrats to put together a strong, cohesive, economic group of proposals aimed at the middle class and those struggling to get there’

Schumer on 2018: "You Cannot Just Run Against Donald Trump" (RealClearPolitics)

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduces Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) as a distinguished guest of the McConnell Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Schumer delivered remarks and took questions from the audience. He was asked about the 2018 midterm election strategy and taking on President Donald Trump.

QUESTION: There has been talk of a blue wave of Democrats winning seats in the 2018 midterms. If this is to happen, what are the biggest obstacles Democrats must overcome before that time?

SEN. SCHUMER: Well, I think that our goal and I have said this publicly in 2016 we didn't do enough of this, people will make their decisions about Donald Trump and we do know that in off-year elections it is often a referendum on the president. Right now his popularity levels are rather low, particularly in lots of states and districts where there are contested races.

But our mistake I think is you cannot just run against Donald Trump. And it is the job of we Democrats to put together a strong, cohesive, economic group of proposals aimed at the middle class and those struggling to get there.
