Flashback: Schumer Vows Dems Won’t Shutdown Gov’t over Immigration

Washington is one day away from a possible shutdown -- owing largely to a dispute over formally legalizing Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrival (or DACA) recipients -- and both parties are blaming each other.

Yet this impasse is something Sen. Schumer, now the leader of the Senate Democrats, previously vowed to avoid.

In 2013, Schumer denounced a Republican budget that de-funded ObamaCare, likening the proposal to a home invader who takes a family hostage. 

Democrats, Schumer said, would never include a controversial policy proposal in a government funding bill. 

"It’s sort of like this: someone goes into your house, takes your wife and children hostage, and then says, ‘let’s negotiate on the price of your house,'" Schumer said during an interview on This Week. “We could do the same thing on immigration. We believe strongly in immigration reform – we could say we’re shutting down the government, we’re not going to raise the debt ceiling until you pass immigration reform. It would be governmental chaos."
