Duffy on Voting Against FISA Bill: ‘I Don’t Think We Struck the Right Balance’

‘I think Rand Paul can extract those modifications and changes if he threatens the filibuster’

EXCERPT:

DUFFY: “I’m somewhere between where Rand Paul and Justin Amash are on the FISA bill and where the House bill ended up. I’m more with the Jim Sensenbrenner, he was the author of the U.S. Patriot Act. What we want is to make sure that we have the technology to surveil would-be American citizen terrorists as they talk to foreigners. That’s a good thing. But I think that we don’t have enough protections in for the average American citizen who could get caught up in this surveillance requiring warrants to be had in the FISA courts, so we’re protecting the Fourth Amendment per Rand Paul’s comments. I don’t think we struck the right balance here. We don't have enough protections in the bill. And I think Rand Paul can extract those modifications and changes if he threatens this filibuster, which I think is appropriate.”
