Mark Eiglarsh: Bill to Punish Elected Officials in Sanctuary Cities Would Make Cities More Unsafe

‘There’s a reason why our local law enforcement are saying, ‘We don’t want this’’

EXCERPT:

DOOCY: "But Mark, one of the things that is so frustrating regarding sanctuary cities is some of these municipalities just decide which laws are going to enforce and which ones they don’t, and that’s frustrating."
EIGLARSH: "It is. I understand it. I think, however, that this bill probably won’t sustain constitutional muster. What I mean by that is you’ve already got a judge, William Orrick of California, district judge who found that the law proposed to cut of funding from the feds to locals who don’t follow whatever the immigration laws the feds want them to is unconstitutional. It’s unduly coercive. So I don’t think this is going to happen. And here’s the other thing. You’re making cities actually more unsafe. There’s a reason why our local law enforcement are saying we don’t want this. You’re eroding the confidence and the -- and the -- and the sacred relationship that they build up with people there in the city."
