When Asked if He’ll Support Hillary in 2016, Harkin Suddenly Can’t Hear the Question

‘I don’t feel it’s proper for me to pile on and try to force her to do something’

On MSNBC today, Andrea Mitchell interviewed Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who just yesterday feted Hillary Clinton at the Harkin Steak Fry in Indianola, Iowa. After a successful interview up until that point, Mitchell asked Harkin if he planned to endorse Clinton in 2016 -- and suddenly Harkin claimed he couldn't hear the questions. She tried again, and again claimed he couldn't hear.

MITCHELL: “Now, Senator Harkin, you have been friend friends with the Clintons for a long time and I was out there back in 1992 when Bill Clinton came for all of these years since. But you were with Barack Obama last time. If Hillary Clinton does run, is she going to be your candidate?”
HARKIN: “I’m sorry, say that again, Andrea?”
MITCHELL: “If Hillary Clinton does run, was she your Democrat? She wasn’t last time. —
HARKIN: “I still didn’t understand.”
MITCHELL: “If she runs for president, are you going to endorse her? You didn’t last time and you chose Barack Obama.”
HARKIN: “The most important thing I have to say, Andrea, is this, and I talked to Hillary and Bill about this. She is focused on winning the 2014 elections. She is focused on keeping control of the United States Senate and electing Democrats across the board. She will be doing that between now and Election Day. After that will be plenty of time for her to decide what she wants to do, whether she wants to run or not. That’s a decision she has to make. I don’t feel it’s proper for me to pile proper to force her to do something. Let her make up her mind and make the decision and after that, we will see what happens.”
MITCHELL: “Okay, Senator Tom Harkin. Sorry for the audio problems out there, thanks for braving with it. And it’s great to see you. And what a career! And I know this is not the end, it’s just a different passage. So we’ll be talking a lot in the coming months and years.”
