Garry McCarthy: The Freedoms that Make This Country Great Also Make Us Vulnerable to Attacks Like Vegas

‘By the way, I’m not ready to dismiss terrorism in Las Vegas’

RUSH EXCERPT:

McCARTHY: "After the Boston bombing when I was still the superintendent. We really ramped up what we were doing as far as coverage for the marathon. Unfortunately, the freedoms that make this country great also make us vulnerable. And it’s literally impossible to cover every single building in downtown Chicago or over at 26-mile route. There will be helicopters up. And I’m sure that there is extra precautions that have been taken. We ramped up the number of bomb sniffing dogs. We put a lot more police into the crowd both undercover and uniformed officers. But, again, you can’t cover everything. If you are in an arena or stadium, it’s a lot easier to cover a target that’s not moving or spread out like that. There will be significant presence by the Chicago police department. But the greatest protection we have, unfortunately didn’t work in Las Vegas. Which is our intelligence that we share with our partners like the FBI working on terrorism and trying to prevent these things from happening. By the way I’m not ready to dismiss terrorism in las Vegas. This guy doesn’t fit the profile of what would normally have been somebody who became radicalized but by the same token, he obviously carried out a well-planned, well-executed, technical attack. The cameras, the bombs, the bump stocks, all of those things take some expertise. It’s difficult for me to believe that he acted by himself."
